Pieria problem

Yep here I am again, Pieria number one died, I had it for 7 years. Now I think Pieria number 2 is going the same way. It is planted in a pot and date I say it, it is about 20 years old. See photo of leaf attached. A lot are going like this and falling off. Any comments will help.
Thanks

  • Your photo is missing. Do you mean Pieris? Pieris can be affected by the andromeda lace bug, which devastated the national collection in Windsor Great Park. Other issue could be length of time in the one pot, but these are only guesses.

Hi. I am not an expert by any means, but I wonder if it is pot bound? Also Pieris need acid conditions: under alkaline conditions the leaves go yellow as they can't absorb the iron they need, so that might be what you are seeing. You could try feeding it with food tailored for ericaceous plants? That might help. Finally, they don't like full sun - the leaves get scorched. I can't tell from the photos what the sun is like, but they prefer dappled shade.

Hope this helps - they are one of my favourite plants!

I agree with Pianoplayer's comments. I reckon it is pot-bound. If you look at the height of the shrub and think about the pot size and the roots, it's really struggling to maintain all that top growth. Then there are other plants around its base sucking what moisture it needs too.

Ok well that's good I suppose. At least it's not infected. What's the best time to replant it though and what size pot would you think. The one it is in is either 40 or 50 litre. Thanks for your help too

Hi - well, if you don't think it is pot-bound, or if it is not possible to put it into a bigger pot or the ground, then your best bet is to dig out some of the compost from the top of the pot and replace it with fresh ericaceous, and to feed it, as I suggested. This article might be of help:
