It December ... any wasp nest will be empty of living wasps, and the queens will have found somewhere else to hibernate ... perfectly safe to dig the nest out or earth it over right now.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
We have nightly visits from badgers, but they haven’t touched the wasp nest. I’ll go and dig it over if it’s now empty. Might be able to finally get that root out without getting attacked!
I'm fairly relaxed about wildlife, apart from moles and slugs, because I gave up vegetables in despair. I find badgers wait until late summer then tear open the nest and eat every living thing. I don't need to feel guilty, it is just nature doing its thing.
It was pretty scary! I ran off once I realised I was being attacked, and luckily they didn’t follow me too far. Managed to get stung through my gardening clothes, luckily not on any bare skin. I immediately took some antihistamines, which I had in stock for hay fever, plus paracetamol. Used ice packs to reduce the itching, and it improved slowly. However a week later, some of the worst stings swelled up again, so I went to the local Minor Injuries clinic at the local hospital, to check it hadn’t turned into cellulitis. They recommended switching to Piriton, the old fashioned sleep inducing hay fever tablets, and gave me some antibiotics in case it got worse. I didn’t need the antibiotics, and the Piriton stopped the itching, and gave a good night’s sleep! All healed up very quickly then. Lucky I am not allergic! Being ultra careful to check for wasp activity in the garden now.
