Wasps nest on Allotment

I was edging the grass path on my site and then had a stream of wasps come out to see what was happening.

That was 5 days ago and they are still coming and going today.

the exit is on the side of the path.

I have no desire to "deal with "the nest but just wondered if anyone has had previous experience.

I have tried You Tube but ended up after 15 minute watching videos of cats !!

They’ll be fine ... eating your aphids 👍 Id just leave the grass etc alone around them for the time being. It’ll all be over come the winter and they’ll be dead. Then you can dig the nest out if you want to.

    Thanks Dove as usual.

As you know every thing.......why are wasps  angry!!    >:)

The bees in my bee hotels and on the allotment just buzz about quite relaxed.

Are they angry?  Maybe if you’ve disturbed them and they’re feeling threatened ... otherwise in my experience they’re just busy going about their business ... they’ve got a nest to build and maintain, a queen to pander to and a family to feed ... 😅

If the nest gets disturbed though they will attack anything that moves in the area. Make sure it's clearly marked for people but animal attacks are harder to avoid. Rats will go after them. Most likely they won't be a problem but just be aware.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Wasps built a nest one year in our chicken house. We co-existed completely peaceably, I used to open the door to check on the hens and not even a buzz. At the end of the summer  we could see the nest properly, such an amazing construction, a thing of beauty :)

    Thanks.

I suppose people report wasps being angry ONLY WHEN they have disturbed them.

    If only I had a brain !!    :o

No sign of any wasps from the underground nest so I will earth it in as I believe they dont re use nests.

They don't re-use old nests as you surmise. The queens will have found somewhere to hibernate until next Spring.

Is it ok to earth over an underground wasp nest now? We have one in the garden which I accidentally disturbed this summer while digging up roots. Got stung 15 times, annoying as they have nested in that area before and I’ve been careful to avoid previous nests in the past.

What you need is badgers. It's the only thing they are good for. They love a thriving wasps ' nest and will sort it out overnight.
