The joys of wildlife, went to turn the compost heap, took off cover, eight slow worms including two heavily gravid females sat on top. Looks like I won't be turning the compost any time soon.
I'd give anything to have Slow Worms in my garden, they've very rare here in Cheshire
The only reptile I've had in the garden was a flyover Grass Snake. It was being carried by a Buzzard to feed nearby young and wasn't very happy about it.
    Luv Dave
Well it was an indicator of presence at least regarding the grass snake! It's strange about Cheshire and the lack of slow worms, they have the widest habitat preference of any the widespread UK reptiles. Bit of a mystery as to why Cheshire has so few records for the species.
  • Lots of grass snakes around here but I've never seen a slow worm. Would love to have them!

I have 4 cats and I am quite happy for them to keep the mice under control.

I'd much rather field mice than cats any day of the week.

New people next door with two cats, one is a terror, and she told me she has already had to save a baby bird from its jaws and just because it flew away she thinks she saved it.🙄 This year have had hardly any baby birds in my garden, and mine is usually a nursery for them.😠

Just move the earth/compost so long as you don't skewer the mouse it'll be fine. We have a plague of voles and watervoles this year due to the warm winter, we get house mice, yellow necked mice and rats, We have beech martins that breed in our attic so they keep mice out of the house and the barn, along with many cats. I did find a field mouse nest in my old greenhouse when we moved in but I never did see one after, never seen a slow worm here either, saw an adder about a mile away and we have sand lizards.

There was research a few years ago that showed just the presence of a cat in gardens caused parent birds to abandon nests. I'll never understand why people think it is OK to let their cats free roam and kill wildlife.

"We have a plague of voles and watervoles"

    Sounds amazing.

Legal duty of care for cats, as with dogs, is certainly the way forward.

IMO cats should stay home. Its so sad to see cats run over on roads, sat outside meowing at windows, and hurt in fights. The best thing I have seen is a catio!
