Help me save my lupins! Beginner here

Hey there.
Well, I have been soooooooo good at remembering to water everything every single night since March..... Then last night, I totally FORGOT!
I woke up this morning and most things were ok, just a little wilted, and look like they will perk up soon.

But not my lupin!
My lupin plant looks a mess!
It was perky and happy yesterday, but this morning all the stems have collapsed to the sides, one of them broken, and it doesn't look good AT ALL.
I gave it a good water and am hoping for the best.

Whilst I was checking it, I also noticed there are a few tiny very light green bugs walking around on the stems! What are these? Do I need to spray it with something?

How do I save my lupin?? Help! Total beginner here! Thank you for your time

Aphids probably, they love lupins. Jet them off with the hose, I also squish them  :#

I would move it to the shade and up the water for a few days, I'm sure it will recover. It really should be in the ground or a much larger trough/pot.

I can't see any photos but those are aphids, lupins are very susceptible to them and they will destroy a plant as you've discovered.

You only have 2 options, and it depends on how much you want to save your plant.

Either give up and accept you are in a losing battle, which is what I and a few others on here had to do this year (seems a bad year for it). Here's a topic I started to find replacements for lupins. https://forum.gardenersworld.com/discussion/1041884/lupin-alternatives/p1

Or settle in for the long haul. You need to kill every single one of those bugs, and they will keep coming back. Squish them with your fingers, check every single stem and under every leaf, and inside every flower spike. They all need to die.

You can try washing them off with horticultural soap, neem oil or spray with water, but that won't kill them.

Good luck. Don't be surprised if you get bored and give up, I lost a 3 foot lupin this year because of them.

  • Ah OK.
Me going near bugs is not happening.
I actually have a real phobia and will have a serious panic attack.
    It might be goodbye lupin.
    How sad.

I can see the photo ... the biggest problem with your lupin is drought which is causing powdery mildew ... this is making it susceptible to the damage by a few aphid ... it needs a much bigger pot, a lot more water... generous watering every morning with some rose or tomato fertiliser occasionally.

No chance of gardening without bugs I'm afraid ... gardening = nature = insects and invertebrates.  But growing plants is a way of dealing with your problem ... I've known people who've done it ... so good luck  :)

Agree with @Dovefromabove. The problem is more due to drought, than the bugs.
It would be much better in the ground, or in a much larger pot.

I have no problem with bugs at all.

I just have a phobia of touching anything squishy or greasy, could be a carrot that's gone soft and greasy, some dried up ketchup, anything like that. It's not the bugs. It's given me serious panic attacks before. I've had counselling for it, hypnotherapy, even NLP. Nothing seems to touch it.

Is there anything I can spray on it as far as you know?

i can do bigger pot and more water - does it need to be in the shade permanently?

A small amount. I certainly couldnt squish anything.
My husband is tending to it at the moment, which is very nice of him :)

It’s hard to gauge your pot size but I have one that’s in a medium sized pot - about 20cm across and my lupins seem to do well, I sort of agree with dove that it looks like it’s dried up and needs a good drink, although I find it perplexing as to how it goes to that state just overnight having missed one watering only. I water mine once every 3 days or so and only daily if it’s been hot like now.

See the white lupin in that medium plastic pot.. it looks similar in size to yours, and my lupins are ok with it.
