I've got quite a few flowering at the moment (perhaps 8?). I'm a bit clueless about dates, but I'm sure that some are earlier than usual (e.g. the tanguticas). They're all doing pretty well (although they are being buffeted by the wind today). Etiole Violette is the best I've ever seen it, but my favourite remains Paul Farges (one of whose parents is vitalba I believe). A very good value clematis, it will keep flowering for a long time and is reasonably attractive to pollinators.
I bought this 'Darius' as a £1.80 liner from Morrisons at the beginning of April. It's put on loads of growth so I let it grow a coupla buds to see what it looks like: It's gonna need a permanent home soon.
Acropolis seems to have finally worked out how to cling, but I've lost all bar one of the stems due to Liam the pheasant damage. Here's one of the new flowers:
On a slightly different note, my partner brought home a bloom from a client's garden for me to see. Here it is up against a fresh Etoile bloom: any ideas what it might be? Apparently it's massive and v.floriferous, and the flowers fade to a light blueish. I thought maybe Jackmanii but I've never actually seen one in the flesh. She's under instruction to bring some cutting material back when its finished flowering!
Very easy, Pianoplayer. However, be aware that Paul Farges is not exactly what you'd call a compact clematis - it likes room to sprawl. I'm not sure how widely available it is - you might need to buy it online. I got mine from Hawthornes.
Anyone thinking about planting a clematis would do well to consult this website - academic not retail - which lets you search by colour, flowering time, eventual size, best aspect - and gives a description including pruning group.
Then you can go and see if your local nursery or garden centre has what you fancy or order online from nurseries such as Hawthorne's, Priorswood, Taylors and Thorncroft.
