I've previously read about vitalba being a pest in some parts of the USA. If you saw the trunks and spread on some in the woods around here you might reconsider the idea!

Thanks Racine... I started this one last year and didn't want to do so again..
..I think there may be 2 Clematis 'Rhapsody' out there... this is the Fretwell version as far as I know..

The "President" I think. Fantastic clem, trouble free.
Brilliant display of colour. We have a Clematis President that we bought for about 50p from Tesco years ago as it was end of season. Despite really neglecting it (we just put it in a pot and stuck some canes in), it comes back to some extent every year. I've decided that once it's flowered I need to give it some TLC and give it the bigger pot, support and feed it deserves! Hoping that GW or Google will tell me when to cut back and re-pot.

First of all, change your ID to hide your email address or you'll get all sorts of unwanted attention from Spammers and worse.

You could re-pot it now and it would be fine, assuming you can man-handle it.  Do give it a thorough soaking first and bury it another 3 or 4 inches below its current level or, better still, plant it in the ground where it can get its roots down as deep as it likes and not rely entirely on your for food and water.

It's a Group 2 which means it should be cut back lightly and dead-headed after the first flush in May/june then given a good feed and a drink.  It will then produce a second flush in August/September.  Alternatively, to keep things simple, you can treat it as a group 3 and prune t hard in March, feed generously and then it will grow new stems and flower all summer from late June/early July.

Thanks for that advice with the Clematis. It hasn't flowered at all yet, I assume due to the neglect for the past three years, although there are buds on there, so I'll relocate later I think.

Also thanks to you and @mikeymustard for the display name shout. Strange as it was set correct on the GW main site but had carried the email add over to here? Solved now though with a log out and back in!

Make sure it doesn't dry out, especially while it's getting its feet down and in bud.  It's a good do-er so should reward you.

I inherited this clematis (Etoile Violet? not sure) with my garden, it was a tangled mess mixed with a climbing rose on a flimsy expanding trellis. I cut it back in March and tie the growth in horizontally to cover as much fence as possible.

@WillDB that's gonna look fab when they all flower. It's a good two weeks behind mine (also had quite a severe 'talking to' earlier this year) but mine is in a pot so soil might've warmed up quicker
