A sucker appears below ground level and the leaves are usually paler. Remove dirt to base of sucker and use your heel to break it off. If you cut it will grow again
..all true, [no need to use your heel]... but the stem in question in the photos, as others have said, is not a sucker..
Hi there hi there new to this forum. I’ve been in a quandary about my 1 year old climbing rose bush. Everything was looking great new flowering buds and leaves looking healthy. Then suddenly from a branch a new shoot has emerged very vigorously! It looks as though a flowering bud will develop. I wondered could this be a sucker?
But from what I’ve gleaned from the answers above it appears not. I’m relieved and thank you for your information. I will come back again now that I’ve found such a knowledgeable group.
Hi @SeasideJack - I'm sure if you have a photo, you'll get more help too.
That always helps, as there is often a problem or situation which you might not see, but it will be obvious to someone like @Marlorena who has extensive knowledge on roses
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@SeasideJack ...no it's not a sucker... suckers don't produce flowering buds in the first season they appear either, so that should reassure you, if you know for sure it's producing a bud... it would help also if you showed a photo of the graft union, just to make absolutely certain the main cane it's on is good..
@SeasideJack ...thanks for the quick photo... all fine, nothing at all to worry about there... no suckers.. ..it's necessary to see that area to be sure, so all good..

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
