Strange growth on the Acer

A white & brown growth has appeared on the base of my potted acer in the last week or so. Its been in the same pot for 7/8 years without any major issues. Can anyone identify it and let me know if I need to worry about it. I'm not a gardener so please treat me like an idiot. No jargon just easy to understand terminology please 👍

Strong water jet on bugs until they drop off.  Check for the next few days and repeat treatment until no sign of them.   This DOES work and saves the use of insecticide which acers really don`t like

Soft toothbrush and alcohol or meths works too
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thanks for your quick replies I'll get to it tomorrow.
    Anyone know what it is?
    Can I prevent future infestations?

    It's as @Dovefromabove has described - scale  :)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Apologies, I hadn't seen @Dovefromabove post. My bad. Thanks again to you all for helping. 🤜🤛

I know!   You`re welcome.  If the critters return water bomb again.  Once the adults are off tree they die but IF young are on there in a few days it`s their turn >:)

  • Cheers, don't suppose you've got any advice on why the Acer produces bare dry branches occasionally?
