Why is my plant dying

mihailmihail Posts: 8
Hello,

I have a spot in my garden which should be one of the best. It is open to the sun from early morning to late afternoon. I have improved the soil with plenty of compost. Last year I planted a ceanothus and rather than grew it slowly shrunk. A few weeks ago I gave up and dug it out and replaced it with a white flowered plant (forgotten name) that was thriving in a
pot on my terrace. Now two weeks later it looks awful. Also seems to be dying back. What is wrong and what can I do? I thought it might be a fungus. There are quite a few plants nearby and all are fine. There is one which doesn't look brilliant and has brown ends but it isn't dying back in the same way.

The photo isn't clear enough, sorry.
It also seems to be in among bamboo which won't help, and there's a load of stuff all round it. That isn't going to help it thrive either.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

The plant looks droughted and maybe that is what happened to the ceanothus. They like well drained soil. We can't grow them as our clay soil dries out too quickly in the warmer months and is plasticene in the winter.

Has it died or has it simply finished flowering?  I can’t see what it is from that photo so can’t tell ... it could be something that just flowers in the spring.

Stupidly expensive camera and no matter what I do it won't get a crisp shot. There is no bamboo but a bunch of rocket about 50cm back.

It is definitely dying back. It is not some after flowering thing. It was on the south  facing terrace without needing to be watered.

On a south facing terrace... was/is it in a pot?  Without needing to be watered?
The plant of my dreams ... I spend my life watering plants ... we must find out what this plant is. Did it come with a label? could the label still be in the pot?  It wouldn’t be the first time a hidden label has been unearthed 😊

We are only just getting into the dry season. I would hardly expect to water from September to March!

What,s all the brown stuff around it?

I'll try some photos of the plant that is not so badly affected and perhaps someone with a big of expertise has some idea. I strong suspect a fungus ...
