Delphinium dwarf

IswashereIswashere Posts: 69
Hi again I have just bought a 6 pack of delphinium jumbo blue. To the best of my knowledge they are the dwarf variety. I would like to plant either 3 in a pot with a dascia. What size pot would you recommend for this? Or if I was to plant all 6 in a pot instead, what size pot would you recommend? I have never grown these before.

IMO they do not make good pot plants.

Have to agree, they are perennial cottage garden plants.

Slugs don't realy bother with my delphiniums. I've grown quite a few varieties of delphinium and non do too well in pots. When I've tried, they suffer with powdry mildew and not flowered.
They are best in the ground imo. Just as aside I've hot some success growing mine from seed. Even though it does take 2 years for a good sized plant

Mine grow fine in pots, but big ones! The mildew was a problem the first year until I became strict about watering from below and not touching the leaves. All depends on the work you are willing to put in.

Everything is worth a try in a container, might surprise yourself.

All those fabulous plants you see at Chelsea are pot grown so it must be possible. You do need big pots, though.

I feel a bit more hopeful now after reading all your comments, thank you. I have a40 litre pot so should I put all 6 in this, would that be ok or can you suggest pot size and qty per pot please. Secondly to avoid the powdery mildew, is it best to water from below or is there something else I can do also?
  • I think it depends really on the depth of pot...as deep as poss! re., watering certainly try to avoid wetting the foliage.
