I definitely would not use Soleirolia soleirolii (Baby's Tears). I know somebody who had it in their garden just outside Huddersfield. It looked very pretty - rather Japanese - but it was rampant over the whole garden. Very invasive - obviously likes the W Yorks climate!

KOG's suggestion is a much better idea. Personally I'd go for Mexican Fleabane but sounds as though that would be too big and fluffy for you. Google pics of it at Great Dixter on their steps - looks absolutely gorgeous!

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

I would stay of baby's tears too. Impossible to get rid of and can spread.
I have majoram, which happily spreads, low growing camomile, low growing campanula.

Lots of good info folks .... at present looking at 1) Corsican mint .. looks perfect for what I want. 2) Scleranthus uniflorus will give it a go but maybe too slow growing? 3) Creeping Thyme.
