Planting/ Growing Allium Bulbs

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
Hi all, as suggested on here I want to plant bulbs  around my Geranium Rozanne until she gets going . I am going to plant crocus and tete a tete daffs in September, I also want to grow Alliums through Rozanne as well. I have never grown these before and would love some info on how and when to plant the bulbs and any suggestions for Alliums around 2ft high would be welcome. Thankyou...

Plant alliums at the same time as your daffs.
Christophii and Schubertii aren't as tall as Purple Sensation (but not as cheap ) I'd go with lots of PS rather then fewer C or S

I have had loads of alliums from parkers dutch bulbs.  If you plant them deep , they multiply up.   I have given away some bunches to neighbours, and have plenty in vases in the house.  The do look a lot like corona virus on sticks though at the moment.

I recommend allium sphaerocephalon. 20in tall and relatively cheap bulbs so lots can be planted. Not quite the classic allium shape but beautiful all the same.
  • Peter Nyssen do good bulbs. I'd maybe choose nectaroscordum as they have smaller leaves which shouldn't overwhelm the geranium rosanne.

The last few years I've got our bulbs from B&Q and they've been excellent.

Based on my hit and miss B and Q tulips I'm going to say go with Peter Nyssen.

From now on I'll aim to buy the best bulbs I can even if it means paying more.
