@Fairygirl when I purchased this from the garden centre they assured me it was ok for an arch, I will wait it out and see how it goes, if I have to move it to a trough and let it climb up trellis then I’ll do that but I want to see how it grows first
It won't grow in a trough. It needs to be in the ground. I don't think your arch is very substantial. Don't get me wrong - you could have it on an arch, but it would need to be a very very sturdy one. A pergola really. They're huge plants once mature and weigh a lot. I think it's a very poor specimen for a garden centre to have sold. I hope it didn't cost a lot.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Jeez. That's a rip off. Even a young, immature plant should look better than that. I think all you can do is give it your best attention re watering etc, and then cross your fingers. Is the arch concreted into the ground, or just pushed in?

I sympathise. Dobbies have always been overpriced frankly. I wonder if you could put some hefty posts in at the main corners - I'm not sure how big the arch is but they're often just four legs. That would at least offer some more support. Perhaps the local gardener could help you too?

You maybe able to train a climbing hyd along an arch by tying it in, but I don't think anyone would ever dream of doing it that way intentionally. (Cue all the pictures showing CH happily growing up thin arches )
