Should I split!

    They're not seperate plants. the take one plant and graft it onto the roots of another, but sometime new shoots from the roots develop so need to be cut off

    That fits perfectly.
    In that case it is grafted and the Viburnum lantana suckers must be removed asap.
    Please ignore my 1st suggestion to lift, wash, split.

    ok so simply cut the two stems of at the base would be ok?

    Correct. Make sure you cut the right stems, easy to get them wrong as I've learned to my cost. lol

    Brilliant, thank you so much. I have now removed the two stems and hope the problem is resolved.  I didn’t get many flowers from the carlcephalum but hopefully next year it will blossom 🍃🌿

    Those cut stems from the rootstock will undoubtedly shoot again - you'll need to be vigilant and keep pulling the shoots off, or the rootstock will take over.

    V.carcephalum is gorgeous...   :)
