Clematis Jackman

MartineBMartineB Posts: 68
Hello gardeners
My clematis Jackman is growing so quickly and is already taller than the fence. What shall I do? Cut the top or encourage it to grow sideways ?
I will be grateful for any suggestions

I am assuming you cut it back to around 6 to 8inches in spring. Jackmanii grow around 3m but can be  trained  sideways if you have the space. If not you can train them back downwards when they get too tall or cut them back if you prefer

Thank you K67. Yes I did prune it hard but before the spring because it looked awful. The garden is quite small and every plant should look good. I think I will let it grow sideways over a new winter jasmine. Thank you again
  • MartineB, hello, I’ve been thinking of getting another Jackmani, (very tall dark purple ) that has hundreds of medium sized flowers in July to October. It was stunning if left to scramble up a wall, mine grew very well, yours could scramble along the top of a fence. Could you tell me if yours is prone to mildew  or did I have difficult one. Thanks Valerie

It needs copious amounts of water @valerieroberts, otherwise mildew will be a problem  :)
Train sideways on wires @MartineB - to get the best coverage  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks Fairygirl, it’s obvious my soil will not suit it, most susceptible plants like phlox get it here in my hot soil. Will think again for another similar. Valerie

Thank you valerierobert and fairygirl. It’s quite a young plant; no mildew yet. I will encourage it to grow to the right as there is a lot of fence to cover

The alpina and macropetalas etc  like drier conditions @valerieroberts, so it might be worth looking at those instead. They're often earlier flowering, and look different to the usual, larger flowering types, but are really beautiful.
Take a look at the specialist sites - Taylors, Thorncroft or Hawthornes, for info and suggestions.  :)

I love clematis! We have just planted a new Montana Pink Perfection where it gets a lot of morning sun. I hope it’s going to be happy there
  • Thank you Fairygirl, will keep that in mind. MartineB, wow thats an enormous cover a shed type, enjoy. Valerie

Montanas will grow pretty much anywhere, but they can take a couple of years to really get going.
Make sure it doesn't go short of water while establishing @MartineB, especially if you're having the dry conditions so many people are just now  :)
