Which plants, trees would encourage bullfinches, goldfinches greenfinches and siskin? Is being near the coast going to have a negative effect in attracting those to your garden?
Wrens have to be the cutest birds in my garden. They hop into the veg box holding the lettuces and pick any small insects off the undersides of the leaves. I love their funny little tails that stick up so much. My OH is German and when he saw a wren over here, for the first time, he said “Wow, a Zaunkönig!”, that literally translated means King of the Fence 😊
These mockingbirds are probably one of the most entertaining species of birds I can have in my garden. Even if they are not the flashiest, they are the most talkative, and they constantly sing, copying the songs of the other birds and other insects as well. They can provide entertainment as they can sing non-stop in my backyard.
I have a family of house sparrows that come twice a day. Seeing five of them try to bath at the same time in one bird bath is so funny. They do a good job of clearing the roses of bugs for me, but even they couldn't keep up with the sawflies this year. Yesterday while out digging, my new Robin was at my feet looking for worms.🙂 I also have a resident pair of Collared doves, who come down to be fed while I'm filling the bird feeders.🙂
I currently have four collared doves, a few wood pigeons, a huge family of house sparrow, coal tits, chaffinch, goldfinch, loads of jackdaws.
I still haven’t plucked up the courage to put meat out for the kites.
We’ve had one sparrow hawk incident (that I’ve witnessed).
I’ve just replaced some trellis with one with slightly bigger squares and the house sparrows are loving it. It’s like a huge version of Celebrity Squares for sparrows.
