We did our pond yesterday, a horrible mess of tangled roots, very mucky job. It's looks pitiful now, but in a month or two we know it will look great. Keep a lookout for Damselfly and Dragonfly larvae. We have a tiny pond, but have loads of them. They're a bit scare to look at, especially when you find one crawling on your hand, but totally harmless.
It's a good idea to divide any plants at the same time, especially if they are congested in pots. You can also buy special aquatic fertiliser for things like Water Lily's.
Yes @KeenOnGreen ... it is mucky and smelly too 🥴 but like you say, it will be worth it. Anything to help the wildlife!
Have you seen any toads in the pond only their spawn comes in long strings rather than big clumps and they lay them underwater so you may not have noticed. As someone else has already said though, leave out what you remove on side of pond so anything can crawl back in.
Enthusiastic but impatient describes my level of gardening thus far

Good morning @Spudface33. We have had toads but not for a couple of years now sadly. We did leave out what we removed and there was no sign of toads spawn. Lots of frogs though 👍
I’ve been following this with interest. We've got a small pond too, but aside from scooping out some blanketweed a few weeks ago, I haven’t done any the cleaning. I saw a video/tutorial from a guy who spent years building and looking after ponds, which pretty much said to leave them alone and do very little with them (plus a whole load of very useful info besides). We followed his advice to the letter and have never have green water, nor whiffy water. Ill see if I can find it to upload, as it was very interesting.

I was wondering about fertiliser. Does a pond need it? My plants are only a year old and haven’t outgrown their planting baskets yet, but in the wild they wouldn’t get fertiliser either, so if I never use it, would would happen?
Makes very interesting reading @dappledshade. Makes us think we should leave well alone. We left a lot of natural waste in the bottom and just skimmed off the top layer of leaves etc. We have lots of frogs so they seem to like it 👍
