Cars Standing Idle

Well the dpf will only get blocked while the engine is running so standing won't have any effect on it, standing on the drive idling without having the occasional long fast run would however lead to it blocking if it was done on too many occasions. I've seen the garage jet washing the exhaust system out as a final solution which may or may not solve the problem but the usual fix is to override the computer to initiate the dpf cleaning function and letting the engine run at high revs for 20 minutes or so.

I think my new-ish petrol car will be OK on once a week to the small local supermarket (2 miles each way) but maybe once a month or so (assuming the situation will go on for that long) I'll go to the big supermarket which is about 8 miles down the motorway, to give it a faster run.

The only time we've had a problem was when we were away for 6 weeks and when we came home the (diesel) Landrover battery was too low to start the engine. 30 mins with a battery charger provided sufficient juice and we then took it for an 'enthusiastic' (we live close to a major trunk road) 20 mile run - all good after that.

We have a motorhome sat on the drive which ain't going anywhere, anytime soon. On Thursday we submitted an online SORN (off road notice) to the DVLA from 1st April and we've already received a refund for the the 2 months road tax paid for April and May. OH assures me it's quick and easy to reinstate the road tax online, so it's road legal again when we're all good to go.

The cheque may go towards some loo rolls...

If you can't find loo rolls you can always use the cheque. LOL!

Hubby is a Motor vehicle technician, at 63, has been in the motor trade since he was 15, says you may find the battery goes a bit flat, otherwise no problem, and I have a 13 year old diesel. letting it idle in your drive or whatever is ilegal

I agree with your hubby, though perhaps lady automotive technicians don't count as I already said the same :) . I drive a diesel disco that is ancient, around 23 years old now. It stands for months on end, when I need it, I charge the battery, put air in the tyres and it goes just fine again.

There is a lot of this on the internet at the moment with people worrying about cars not being driven every day. None of ours have been for the past 12 years, which is when my OH got ill and I gave up full time work to become his carer. My car can sit for months and then gets resurrected if I need to pick up bulky stuff. His goes out once a week for the weekly shop about 3 miles away. Neither suffer from it at all.

The guidelines are to run the engine once a week for 15 minutes. That should be enough to keep the battery topped up.

Whoops, humble apologis |Gemma, no insult intended, (I tried to PM you, couldnt get it to go thru, now the site is different) Are in in another country I wonder, as you put Automotive technician, a lot of people are a bit weird about me saying Vehicle technican, they say "Oh, hes a mechanic", or worse a "fitter".Running engine 15 pointless you need to go for a run.

The problem with newer cars is that they have so much unnecessary sh*te on them that it drains batteries quicker.
I discovered that when my car wouldn't start one morning. It was 2 years old.
What was really annoying for the recovery chap was,  he couldn't move the seat back to get in, because - it needs the power on to move it... :/
