Show him this @Charlotte_1 . Made a year ago out of the old shed that stood here. As you can see its four boards high and has an open bottom ( but very poor soil under it) so plenty of drainage. Managed to grow potatoes in far side and carrots and other things in nearest bit. You can see the bracing bar across the middle of ours. 😁

I'd like to build quite a deep raised bed. (To go on an area which I cannot sensibily cultivate.) About 50cm possibly. Certainly deeper than the 33cm one I already have. Is it best to use three planks for this rather than 2x25cm?

I have a deep bed @REMF33 over 60cm, as I can't kneel . Whatever you use will need to be both sturdy and well braced, as that's alot of weight to hold. Mine was made of an old sheds walls tung and groove, so very robust with 2"×2" posts to nail them to, and cross bracing on the large bed, 120cm across.

They look good but if they are one point four how can you reach when you can't walk around them, unless the photos misleading, because they look tight to the fence, other wise they are great, I am thinking of doing something similar.

The two side beds are against the fence, but only 45cm deep, it's the middle bed I was talking about and ( even though I'm short) I can reach to the middle from both sides.😁

Very nice, we used scaffolding boards, lined with membrane,I see folk have said sleepers, we used rail way sleepers as steps in our last garden they weren't anything like these, cost a huge amount, soooh heavy, plants not recommended because of the protection chemical stuff used on them

We are off to buy planks tomorrow. I hope they don't end up being very expensive. Scaffolding boards does seem the way to go from a price perspective.

Have you thought of decking planks @REMF33 , we built from them a couple of years ago and they work well.

I will look into it. I really need to do this this weekend, unfortunately. My current two raised beds have to be replaced and the contents transferred to new ones  before next weekend :o (I am having a foundation put down for a greenhouse on the site of the current collapsing ones next weekend...) I would have been happy to have bought a kit but OH is being a bit penny pinching. I reckon Travis Perkins planks may end up being as costly as a kit, but we shall see.
The whole thing may fall through if TP can't provide. All our local big name DIY shops seem to be very low on stock across the, er, board.
