..such lovely purples @Nollie... I'm impressed with the foliage on The Prince, especially in your current conditions... I'm also impressed with your knowledge on vegetables.. I know who to come to for advice should I feel the need in future... I'm not a fruit and veg person..
Don't you get aphids ? I'm struggling to see any.. they look so clean..

@Aero84  I'm looking forward to seeing your Fighting Temeraire rose... it's not one I know really.. although some Austins are very similar in bloom form and growth..
Yes I do think the sparrows were responsible for damaging stems on your roses... it's very common in my garden each Spring..

@Songbird-1  ...I'm sorry to hear about your OH's aunt, so it's a nice way to remember her... I always have a Pittosporum bush in my garden as it was my mother's favourite plant...  I'm not sure what advice you were looking for exactly though?..

I planted a purple leaved sage under one of my climbing roses, it didn't stop the blackspot and I'm now going to dig it up as I can't stand the smell. It's also crowding the rose's lower stems. I understood it exuded sulphates so thought I'd try it as an experiment.
Interesting about the tea leaves, might try that as I always put my used tea bags in the compost bin.

Hi @Marlorena, The Prince is going to be an interesting one, I think. The foliage is susceptible to windburn and unfortunately the position of it’s large, heavy pot seems to get fairly windy. The rain it gets is blown in as it’s under the deep eaves of my roof. I think it will want to be a climber, growth a bit spindly so far, but early days...

I do get some aphids, but not mega infestations, so far!

Hi. This is DA's Lady of the Lake last year before most of the leaves started falling off, some would appear to develop black spot, and some would turn yellow and just fall off. I seem to remember the flowering wasn't that badly affected, but obviously looked a mess. Alongside it is Open Arms, which flowered well but again suffered leaf loss. Both had been kept well watered and would have had a dose of rose fertiliser in Spring. How can I prevent a similar fate this year.

PeteS that is gorgeous! I have not tried this product but seems a possible solution to try?

    Anyone here use Sulphur Rose?

Fascinating to read that when the air was full of sulphur from pollution blackspot didn't exist. It would indeed be interesting to read about it's effectiveness from someone who has used it.

@Songbird-1   oh ok.. well you can but it's got a bit late into the season now to be digging up roses and potting them... would it be possible to wait until October or later?  you can do it now, I've just done one but I don't always recommend to do as I do...as it will require more attention from you and I wouldn't want you to lose your rose...

The correct time to do this is Oct-March... outside of that comes with a risk..

  • @Marlorena hi, I just wondered what experience u have in moving roses at different times. I moved my munstead wood in November and my Olivia rose Austin in February. Obviously their different roses but were and still are in same soil with Same amount of sun but munstead wood has really struggled so far this year and has hardly grew whereas Olivia rose Austin has done well and put on good growth with several buds already.

so will that be down to the time of year I moved them or just purely just luck that one is happy being moved and other isn’t?
