@Perki ...you like some of the trees I like... my favourite Cornus is kousa 'chinensis', or any of the various types of that.. and of course the controversa 'variegata'.. I also love Cotinus 'Grace' grown as a small tree, it's just fabulous.. I used to have a Bonsai book, they work wonders with those, and I learnt how to do it, but never really took it up... I think you can Bonsai just about anything... my favourite Arbutus is unedo 'Rubra', because it's slower growing and compact for small gardens.. it's just fantastic in the autumn, I loved it, and keep meaning to get another here.. the other I've had in another garden was called 'Marina' that had good peeling bark too, but a much larger grower.. I also love anything Sorbus.. I've had the Amelanchier too.. 'Ballerina' that was just lovely all the year really, grown on a single Standard trunk..
Hope to see your trees this summer... photos please whenever...
..I should have added... and I'm giggling a bit here,... sorry Perki please forgive, but I think you mean guerrilla gardening.. lol.. but we can do gorilla too, that sounds like fun.. ..great to do that, I've done some in the past.. guerrilla that is..
Oh yes silly me never would of noticed I don't think its the first time I've done that as well .
I went to Gresgarth gardeners last year quite a few flowering cornus trees and various others but I went in August so missed the cornus and all the roses as well.
No problems Perki.. I've not heard of Gresgarth, I'll go look it up.. edit.. I just checked... oh wow, it's really nice.. Arabella Lennox-Boyd's garden.. I used to follow her on Instagram..

Yes, probably as it’s unusual times, they’ve left that code running all year. It’s supposed to just be for first time purchasers but it works for anyone and multiple uses 🙂
My Condolences to @Marlorena and @Tack and best wishes for a speedy recovery to you and your wife, @Mr. Vine Eye I hope it passes quickly.
Im enjoying everyones gardening stories and the before and after shots! I grew up with a large garden and parents who did a lot of gardening (Dad was a member of the fern society so lots of those!). We only had a few roses, but I really remember "Handel" which grew outside my little wendy house and I loved. I have a very good memory for plants and was one of those kids who asked the name of EVERYTHING in the garden and out on walks, and Dad, who clearly did the same himself, happily obliged!
I had pots and planted bits and pieces outside the wendyhouse as a child, at Uni I collected houseplants in my dorm room and once I moved out and rented I got pots immediately which I stuffed with annuals, some patio roses and a few clematis which moved to various places with me (with some difficulty in huge pots!). We finally brought 6 years ago and I finally had a garden of my own. New build so started from scratch! I planted a tree, a climbing rose and wisteria almost immediately. Its horrendously hard to dig in new build soil, and rubble not too far down so the beds have been taking shape very slowly and with a lot of hard work. Ive got about 15roses in of varying types. We have 5 basset hounds, so the lawn has had it though, soggy mudbath with no grass left! Its getting patioed and gravelled next month and drainage putting in. The borders will be properly edged which should be more practical and help with the drainage issues, then I can pot all the new roses Ive got waiting!
@Mr. Vine Eye ..either / or... depending how it's pruned.. lightly and it should attain 6 foot in time, as they nearly all do, but can be kept shorter... it's worth getting for the scent alone... I would have one even if kept to a pot.. I think your children would love the scent,.. it's all grapefruity.. I've not known another like it.. ..see what comes out next month..
@JessicaS ..thanks Jessica, so much.. ..I love your story... I know what it's like to struggle with new build, but I think if you are lucky to get a big enough plot, they are great because starting from scratch... I developed a rose garden with just 4-6 inches of top soil, overlying a bedrock of hard or decomposing granite.. the builders also buried numerous building breeze blocks along the way.. lol.. How on earth do you manage with 5 hounds...? I have one, a Greyhound, and he used to be quite a handful, bit quieter these days, he's 12.. 'Handel' was one of the first roses I grew... so just to remind you here's a picture of my very first garden circa 1986 and you can see Handel on this wonky looking rustic feature, one planted each side.. the red is Paul's Scarlet and the whites are 'Iceberg'..
