@Marlorena I don't have that many roses mostly David Austin roses - Mary Rose - Golden celebration - Lady of Shallot - Malvern Hills - Generous Gardener - Ghislaine D feligonde - paul scarlet . Adding Gabriel Oak this year . Sorry to hear about your brother passing.
@Mr. Vine Eye hope you and your OH recover fast ,Couple of my friends have had Covid they passed it on to their partner but the kids never got it or showed any symptoms .
@Marlorena It still a young plant so I've not expected to much from it yet . Its been good really it planted in a difficult site and its put some growth on this year, flowered for quite a while with flushes well into autumn. It job is to cover a 6 x 10 shed so it can do what ever it wants free rein, attaching it to a metal roof so it goes over the top is my main concern , thinking of just using gaffer tape until its weight will hold it in place.
@Perki ..yeah, I think it's good for that purpose too...although it may swamp it in time.. hope you show us a picture of it this year.. .. I've had all those you grow except Golden Celebration.. I've not had that one..
I will take a picture when the time comes. It can swamp the shed and the other shed next to it if it wants , I just want it to be a mass of colour I can see when I come round the corner and see the house / garden from a distance. I have Ghilaine just opposite the shed on the fence and paul scarlet even further down the fence hopefully I'll have a wave of colour on that side, its a public foot path / access to garage site so you can see it all in one from either side. Keep thinking of getting rid of paul scarlet barely any scent and doesn't repeat flower and vulnerable to black spot.
Golden celebration has glorious large flowers with a pleasant strong ish scent . But I find it spindly, can be a bit tight on the second flush also very vulnerable to black spot I rarely spray roses I just put up with . In other words I wouldn't recommended GC should of gone with Roald dahl instead. I am going to give Golden C a manure mulch this year to help it on its way, if it gets better I may give it my seal of approval .
@Perki ..it'll look great with such lovely roses... do you prune your Paul's Scarlet after it's flowered? if so, you should try leaving it alone, it may well flower again that way.. roses like this are notorious for not repeating if pruned too hard after the main flush..
There's a lot of growth buds already starting to push out on some of the roses.
We've got a long period of cold weather forecast though. So will wait til mid February as usual to prune.
Ohh I had a big surprise when I went out. I spotted little silvery brunnera leaves in the area where I'd originally planted my brunnera Jack Frost. The first one I got, I lifted it to try and divide it autumn 2019 and it just fell apart, I potted the biggest bits but they all got root rot and died.
Apparently I must have left a little piece in the ground and it's just now showing itself!
Best wishes for your family too @Mr. Vine Eye . It's always a lovely surprise to find something has survived that you thought lost.
My gardening background was subsumed by my mother's . It wasn't till I moved continents away that I could call a garden my own. I have virtually no pictures but this is a bit of one of my 3 tropical gardens. This was to hide an ugly chainlink fence
with a white tarp on it that the landlady thought would hold jungle
wildlife back. I was allowed free rein with planting.I always had pots even then
Re Malvern Hills, I was wondering how it compares to Pilgrim in colour and density of individual bloom. I imagine MH is a good deal smaller in flower size. Pilgrim petals seem a lot denser and MH looser... MH seems to be better in shade. How does MH flowers die? I like a bloom that dies well. Thanks for your thoughts....
