@edhelka I used to use slow release granules but I’ve stopped doing that recently.. I find that even when it rains not much of that water actually gets to the bottom of the pot as the roses have grown rather large effectively creating a canopy. I still water my potted roses once a week even if it’s been raining.. and I always add a slightly diluted feed to my watering can.
@celcius_kkw Yes, that canopy thing happens to some roses and some are in the rain shadow of the house wall. But I still feel like I am wasting water (and time). And I think they aren't dry in the lower half but maybe I should check that to be sure.
@edhelka, I did, and now do, exactly the same as @celcius_kkw. I stopped the granular DA feed since I learnt it wouldn't do much good in a pot and switched to a balanced, non-organic liquid feed but I always water the pot first, then water again with the liquid feed added to make sure it soaks down to the roots. Since then, taking potted Gertrude Jekyll as an example, I have had a better repeat and she is now thinking about a third flush. If anyone knows a good non-organic slow-release feed I would be interested to know that too.
@poppyfield64 I’m kind of regretting not getting Proper Job now, after seeing yours and Tacks!
Re Rose de Rescht, mine has only just got started, but I expect it to push out a lot more blooms next year when it will also be in the ground. It blooms generously and in ‘waves’ by all accounts, but others do say the blooms don’t last long on the bush, so I think that is just a characteristic of it. As a comparison with another rose of similar colour and size, here is RdeR (bottom) and the modern Heidi Klum (top). The latter’s blooms last much longer, but the fragrance of RdeR beats it hands down, even though HK is also strong - so that’s the balance: Close up of RdeR:

@Nollie, i like all the photos of stormy weather. I love deep Coloured roses. How is it have been doing in terms of desease resistance? Do you deadhead it? I have a place where i can plant a climber but wont be easy to deadhead.
@edhelka Now that my roses are in their second year I find that they can go without watering for much longer than last year. So far I’ve left them for a whole week in warm sunny weather (but not during heatwave) after one good thorough watering (till water comes out of drainage hole) - and they’ve been absolutely fine with no sign of wilting whatsoever.
@Nollie How’s Heidi Klum’s fragrance..? I came across it once online and it’s said to have a knockout perfume..?
@newbie77 Stormy Weather is 100% healthy, not a hint of BS. I deadhead because it’s on a low fence with easy access either side. It does keep producing more big clusters but I can’t say if it would with no deadheading. The petals do drop cleanly though.
@celcius_kkw yes Heidi Klum does have a good fragrance, sweet rose/parma violets, so kind of ‘sweeties’ rather than the intense, complex old rose smell of RdeR. Unfair to compare the two but I do as they are next to each other. My sense of smell is not the best, tho, so it probably is knockout if even I get it. @Tack also has it and I think said it was strong so could probably give you a better idea.

@celcius_kkw I think Heidi Klum has a great scent, very parma violet as @Nollie says but also deeper old rose. I just happen to have the first bloom of a new flush open today so that is hot off the press. I can't compare with RdeR but have huge expectations now from my bareroot ordered one. Sandringham finally giving me a second flush tooEasy does It has such bright opening buds it is just silly, not fully conveyed here but believe me, positively neon. WOH
@Nollie I am thinking about using Osmocote Pro, I like the NPK 19-9-10 + additional Mg, lasting for 5-6 months. Not the cheapest but seems to be formulated for nurseries/potted plants.
