  • @Omori - it’s grown on me (Mariner) really like it now.

I said I was looking forward to being in the garden this weekend, doing deadheading etc. but I’ve actually spent most of my free time on the wildlife pond at the allotment...maybe next week!

  • @Omori - actually I’ve only got 8 roses in their second year and three of those were moved so they’ve really had to restart - the rest are all first year roses. So I don’t think I’m ahead!

Lovely roses, as ever, everyone. I like the fact Proper Job opens to see it’s stamens, @Tack. I’m still waiting for my first bloom on Pure Poetry, but I have a fat bud, so soon..

@newbie77 I wonder if a tough, disease resistant red floribunda, something like Kordes’ Bordeaux would suit, unless your friend particularly wanted an HT?

@peteS I have Bonica, new this year. I haven’t really taken to it, it’s just kind of there. For me, the blooms are a pale, muddy pink even in mild sun and once spent, hang around looking like dirty socks. But it looks fab for others so hopefully it will for you.

BTW, for those interested in Rose de Rescht, the blooms are short-lived, two days max, but it is meant to be very floriferous so I hope it’s going to be one of those roses where that doesn’t matter so much. The petals drop cleanly and the fragrance, just from a bud, is incredible.

Thanks for all the lovely photos. I walked round my garden last night (very carefully as I've just developed vertigo) and noticed that one of my 1st year unnamed roses on it's second flush, has deep pink blooms on it whereas the first lot were a very, very pale blush pink. Strange. It was labelled as blush pink.  Is this weather related do you think? Thrown me a bit because I was going to plant out all four roses (5th yellow rose is already in the ground) over the winter according to their colours, now that I've had a chance to see the precise shade. The red one is definitely what I'd call a deep pinky red not a true red but I don't mind that. The last two, a white and an apricot are true to their labels.

Thanks @Nollie and @Omori. My friend is completely new to having a garden, so no preference about HT. I am thinking double delight could also be a good option.

@edhelka, so true. Fragrance makes such a difference. I always end up cuttings the most fragrant rose for bringing indoors.

I will try to choose balance of healthy and fragrant.

Does anyone here use slow-release fertilizer in pots? Do you have a favourite?
I've been using soluble fertilizer but most of the time I only water to feed. Since June, I could count on one hand when the rose pots needed to be watered.
