...I've just enlarged your picture and I now think it might be Gertrude Jekyll, as the foliage is just too healthy for C de Chambord, which is its parent, so they do look alike in many ways.. I have Comte de Chambord and it's flowering now, but I no longer have GJ...
I have one rose to highlight today, I haven't shown it much before. It was slow to start and not interesting in the first half of the season but is making up for it now. It has been flowering continuously for some time now.
'Lavender Dream', a close relative to polyanthas and hybrid musks, mauve or lilac blooms, darker on the reverse, very pretty. I think it will show much more in the next season. Eventually, I hope for a nice 75-100cm mound of blooms.
'Astronomia' still flowering despite the blackspot. If it grows bigger next year, it could become a pretty rose.
'Joie de Vivre' with its autumn mix of pink and apricot.
Should we save our Boscobel? It started life in a pot, then moved to quite a shady spot which is supposed to be fine, but it hasn't flourished at all, looks miserable, black-spotted, and the few flowers it produces ball up before they even open properly. I could move it yet again to a sunnier spot but is it worth it or better to start again with a healthier variety?
Its been very hectic this week. I’ve been back at work (school) and it’s been so exhausting working around all the new bubbles/Covid routines which have had to change each day as new problems were thrown up - I’ve just been going straight to bed!
Looking forward to having some time in the garden this weekend.
@celcius_kkw - I took another hip from a rugosa and have the seeds ready to sow and over-winter. For fun, as much as anything! But hoping to have some to plant at the allotment.
Also going to have a sheltered bed of rose cuttings there. While I haven’t got round to it this year, next year I’ll have a go at doing some controlled pollinating and harvesting the seeds from some of my roses. Will be a fun experiment to see what grows.
@dominia30 I think it’s worth saving your Boscobel.. if you’re scent driven like me then Boscobel is one of the best in terms of fragrance - it’s uniquely sweet in smell and in my humble opinion, one of the best in terms of strength and character of its perfume.
I grow mine in a pot too (2nd year) and it gets about 6 hours of direct sun from afternoon onwards at the peak of summer.. mine gets the odd bit of blackspots but never severe enough to defoliate the plant. And I only spray minimally.
Here’s mine in June..
The blooms don’t ball in the rain for me either.. perhaps because mine receives a bit more sunshine? I hope I have convinced you give it another chance because I do think it’s quite a special rose.
@mr. Vi@"Mr. Vine Eye" I’ve actually found a rugosa hedge by a car park not far from where I live recently.. they were in full bloom about a month ago.. maybe I should pop by again and see if I could help myself go a hip or two as well... it’s tempting 😝
..It's a superb rose when well grown isn't it Adrian?... as yours is of course.. I like the range of colours you get on it too...
@Skylarks ... can't advise on colour combinations as it's too personal, but Burgundy Ice is not the healthiest rose if that's important to you... I've not ordered from that supplier before, perhaps someone else has.. ?
'Tottering by Gently'... ..an early hip... it produces loads of these which have 8 or 9 seeds per hip..
..for those growing The Generous Gardener check out the enormous hips it produces.. great big fat ones..
..I'm rather liking 'Windflower', scented of cloves... and in constant production.. 'Eisvogel'... 'The Country Parson'...retrieved from the ground.. I think I'm preferring this to Silas Marner, so far... but the yellow does quickly fade to a creamy white colour...
