Wow. After watching the link to Whartons roses, I'll never moan about the price of a rose again, I hadn't realised how labour intensive the process was.
I found a volunteer in a pot under 'Claire Jolly'! (you see how bad I am about weeding)
I want to try breeding one day and the plan was to get better at propagating methods this year (growing from seeds, cuttings and maybe also to try grafting) and here I have a volunteer to care for. I hope it will live and flower later this year.
Everything has been flattened by nonstop monsoon-like rain here for days and when I say monsoon, I’m not exaggerating! Even the sturdy, upright clusters of Julia Child are bowing under the pressure. Ridiculously, even though I have only recently got ten new roses in the ground, I’m planning and tweaking my next list of ten to order in autumn.
Subject to how my Tantau ‘test subject’ does in the summer heat @Marlorena, I am going to order Admiral and Gospel. I do find I need to go for the deepest colours in order to avoid dull, washed out blooms. I would also love to have this, but being a rugosa hybrid, I don’t think it would be happy here, based on past experiences:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie You should see my list after getting more than 25 new this season. It has these sections: "wanted/shortlist", "maybe/longlist", "even more longlist", "to research" and some location-specific sections. It's in a weird mix of Czech and English (so typical for my gardening notes these days) and there are around 30 roses at the moment
Ah, but you are a certified lost cause @edhelka, I am still hoping to be saved from my obsession. I’m clearly still in the denial stage. My list of ten only has fifteen on it, pretty modest really 😆

Oh yes, sturdy neck on a rose sounds great! Just did a round of deadheading in my garden and was again disappointed by so many droopy DA blooms...Wollerton Old Hall, Teasing Georgia, Boscobel, Munstead Wood, the Pilgrim, Poet's Wife ...all pointing downwards! Pilgrim also riddled with black spot.
On the other hand, loving my Wild Edric, Roald Dahl, Desdemona, Shropshire Lad. Generous Gardener, James Galway and my new Gabriel Oak and Eustacia Vye. But really want to expand my wings beyond DA now, Tantau sounds like a good option.
Here's a rose that I love- It came with the house and doesn't have a name tag, but I believe it is Pink Perpetue as it matches the description perfectly. I grow it together with clematis Super Nova.
