The Dimbleby lecture was given by the lead of the Oxford group.  She described in detail why and how they were able to move so quickly.  Worth pointing any sceptics towards it as it shows just how much hard work they did. It was aired last night BBC 1, so I guess it will be on i player.

Amazing that she gave the whole lecture without notes.

Yes I spotted that too, my old boss at the Blood service used to do that,  shows someone who really knows what they are talking about.

Astonishing fluency. I don't suppose the govt or the funders will pay attention to the plea for for funding for ongoing pandemic preparedness. They ignored the warnings before Covid and they will go back to sleep soon enough, no doubt.

I’ve been weighing it all up and I think I’ll be cancelling going to the work xmas ‘do’. The youngsters will think I’m an old grinch, but that’s just how it is when you have vulnerable people in your family. It comes to something when I feel safer seeing patients than mingling in a restaurant.

probably a good decision @AuntyRach.   There will be other Christmases and other festivities to share later when it's safer for all.

    I'm staying close to home.

Today I had builders in. I propped open back door and front door both open all day with a wind whistling through. They probably thought it was overkill and it was freezing - but good ventilation counts. They not thought about bringing masks or even asking. I have been Covid-free and cold-free for two years. I don't want to be laid low over Christmas feeling, sorry for myself.

Death certificates don’t have to give one cause of death … in the instance @debs64 suggests surely the death would be recorded as Covid with diabetes as a contributory factor?
Yes this is my take .On my father's death certificate from recollection it was pneumonia but mentioned his underlying health due to prior stroke as contributing.

A builder phoned and asked me for a site visit last week but casually mentioned he had a cold so I made excuses to put him off for a few days. He rang this morning to say he's now in isolation as it turned out to be covid and he's really ill now. :|  It's one of those 'manly' professions where PPE is still scoffed at. I don't think I've seen more than a handful of builders wearing masks during the whole pandemic and that's including while they're working with materials that can harm their lungs.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I don't think I've ever had a builder or workman come along with a mask or ask about it. Nor have I seen one. When I mention it they either laugh or scowl.
