I fear lockdown might go on for longer than we anticipate.

  • @pansyface, in theory you are right,  many people could be trained to give the jab, but as ever there are some other concerns.  When I was a registered lab scientist I was subject to scrutiny I had to prove my continued competence,  I had professional indemnity insurance etc. Just pulling people off the street and showing them what to do is no longer enough, thankfully.  All medical professionals and those allied to medicine are subject to similar standards depending upon their role.

A friend of mine who was on the volunteer register during the first lockdown has been asked if she can volunteer again, to help with the vaccination programme. It's not to actually give the jabs but to help with things like admin tasks, directing people, cleaning chairs etc between patients and such like.

Is it just me, or do others think that 104 year olds getting the vaccine, when most front line medical staff haven't, is wrong?
I dunno. Most people who've made it to 104 matter to someone.

In the last 3 days the news has had people saying teachers should be prioritised, police should be prioritised, paramedics, etc - there are lots of people who should be vaccinated and they can't all be first. I know the list says that health and care workers are in the second group after care home residents and staff, but I think in reality its happening in parallel quite a bit.
A family member of mine is a health care worker and she's had her first jab (before Christmas) - she said they were essentially vaccinating the people with appointments (elderly) plus as many hospital staff as could be rounded up each day so the defrosted vaccine was all used each day.

Possibly that's just her hospital but I doubt it

That seems to be the case here too - elderly uncle had his first jab before Christmas when he had an outpatient appt. Lots of healthcare workers I know have had or are about to have theirs (thinking about it, they're all hospital based). And while I *do* think that health workers, care workers and teachers should be very high up the priority list due to their increased risk of catching and passing on the virus, I disagree with those who think we should prioritise based on how worthwhile a person is seen to be or how long someone might have left. I may have many arguments with the government about their handling of the pandemic, but this is not one of them.

I know @LG_ but, logically, you have to prioritise the people who are providing the skills that protect us in the long run.  So many doctors, nurses and other NHS have died already or are off sick or are isolating that the NHS is even more short staffed than usual.

@punkdoc  Food for thought.  Here in France, once you hit 75, you don't qualify to have free smear tests or mammographies anymore.   It feels like a matter of "who cares?"

I know that none of the ICU consultants in my old hospital have yet been vaccinated. If they can't work and you become very ill, you die. I think that priorities are wrong, but obviously that is just my view, not the medical professions view.
