He adds that even when rules are in place "it is only when a community comes together" that case numbers begin to decrease.
Not the best choice of words😐

    Hello Glenys.

Covid is a virus and surely we all know that viruses can have long term and seriously negative effects on a person's health and it's often the apparently most healthy who get these the worst.  Just look at the numbers of high achievers laid low by ME, glandular fever and the like.

@Yviestevie - I would not expect firemen to enter a burning building or fight a fire without the necessary protective gear, breathing apparatus and team work.  Similarly, I would not expect policemen or any other essential services to check on a death without protecting their hands, face and space limits, just as they would take care for possible HIV deaths and other contagions.

  • @strelitzia32 as Dove said R4 have been following up on a series of people that they interviewed in the first wave to see how they are now.  The case highlighted this time is certainly NOT that unusual.  Quite a lot of young, & middle aged people are suffering long term after effects of this virus.  I think it is worth reiterating a quote from a medic quite early on who said " people keep comparing this to flu, this is about as close to flu as heartburn is to a heart attack "  Yes  in many people it's a mild illness but in very many it is not. None of us can afford to take the chance.

Unfortunately, what we expect Obelixx and what people have had to do to keep the rest of us safe has not been the same thing during this epedemic

Sorry but I am just not worried about catching the virus. I have worked with the public all the way through the pandemic. I have travelled on buses. I am not a worrier and I think the risk to me is negligible. I social distance and wash my hands and respect other people’s wishes and I think that’s  enough. You will always find a scare story but for every one about COVID I could post 2 about lockdown. If you are worried change your plans for Christmas. I won’t be changing mine. I am planning to spend time with my family.
On the note about the police officer it’ is almost impossible to avoid infection when you are in physical contact with many people daily and social distancing at home is difficult for a young man with a young family. I say thanks a million to people like him who risk so much every day to keep us safe. He has worked hard throughout the pandemic and done his best. Unfortunately he isn’t perfect but it’s a shame anyone thinks they have the right to judge him harshly for that.

I think people have to do what they think is best for them and theirs. Some have good immunity and have few symptoms.  I know of one in his 70's who now has long Covid. His wife is older but had no symptoms. My Aunt that is 84 somehow caught it walking the dog. She has a bad cough. My other Aunt is 89 and is fully shielded, along with Mum who is 86. Family take in food, have a quick chat and go.  All of our family are taking Vit D. I note the government said it was recommended, but certainly no one in our family thought to be at risk has had a prescription. We just ordered some online and took responsibility for ourselves.  First lockdown didn't bother me much, I could get out in the garden and the weather was good. Now I am getting bored with old films on the telly.  Still, plant porn has started to arrive. I can plan next years seed order. Next year is going to be wonderful. Xmas at Easter. It could start a new trend.

None of us really think we'll have a heart attack, get cancer, be in a serious car accident - but they happen to someone. Fine, the chances are small - but it still happens.
The difference to me, is that most risk doesn't involve me putting someone else at risk - does that make sense? With Covid it's odd - I can't even tell if I've got it or not. So today, I could go and spend time with my daughter and totally unwittingly be carrying the virus. I have no idea. And to me it's not about me and my family per se - it's that person, 3 degrees removed that gets seriously ill because I forged a link. That then becomes a no-brainer to me - if I don't have to be a potential link, then I try not to. Break the chain.
Just watch the numbers a couple of weeks after Christmas - and I bet that the human beings and families those numbers represent, never thought it would happen to them.
But it is all a personal choice and how we assess the risk - I fully understand that.
