Floralies, fingers crossed for you, what an awful situation. Hello Steve, its your local neighbour!! I do my letter box, door bell, handles, light switches, as well as worktop, daily. You should see the videos we used to watch, bacteria, when they use the dye, where it lands ,everywhere you touch and dont realise, you think you have a spotless house. The aerasol effect not just from coughing, sneezing, vomitting, but visiting the toilet, (especially, you men) The postie used to wear gloves and mask (he is vulnerable for health reasons) you get a lot of charity envelopes, bags through the door, the bloke who delivers my parcels and rings the bell, he sure isnt washing his hands hourly. If you get round in the not distant future Steve, you will be as safe as I can make it. Hubby and I are on medication thats makes us "vulnerable) grandson coming today, gets astham and croup, hospitalised with every single bout, you should see my bathroom, its like an OR! I want to safeguard him, and us.
From what I gather though bacteria and virus are different on surfaces. Bacteria multiply within themselves - pseudo living organisms. Viruses don't spread on surfaces - they need a host cell to multiply from what I gather. So if a virus is 'put' on surface, it stays there (for some period) and potentially gets picked up from there. They don't spread on the surface itself.
But anyway, the point of my original post on Boris' letter was on the stupidity of sending out 'mass mailings'. You are a case in point - you obviously think that there is a threat 'outside' - absolutely fine. So you react to that and put up your own barriers to keep your 'safe area' - good - I hope most people do something similar. Boris' letter increased the likelihood that one of the letters would carry the virus by however many letter they eventually sent. The original number on the TV was 14 million, but that morphed to one to every household - and so 30+ million. And for what? Radio, TV, electronic (social media) was and is safer - and had already had the same message. That was it. No paranoia, no fear, just pointing out how stupid the act was.
You are correct Steve viruses dont "spread" on surfaces, they are picked up,but they can live on metal and plastic for up to 72 hours, my grandson has been shielding (and his Mum and sister) since March, I got berated by a neighbour saying "people are allowed to use your toilet) if its possible, (I am techno rubbish) I will get my daughter to post the bathroom, in its glory, and maybe if you are lucky, some pics of the plot!!
I went with OH to the supermarket last week for the first time since the middle of March, he has been doing the shopping each week. I donned mask and gloves and hated every minute of it. There was a chap near me coughing and then wiping his nose with his hand. I rushed round as quick as i could snatching what we needed off the shelves at great speed, I couldn't get home quick enough.
I have been going to the supermarket throughout the lockdown at least twice a week as I get my Mum's supplies as well as my own. No car so take my trolley so cannot get too much at any one time. The shop (Morrisons) took a couple of weeks to get things changed around but the system of queues, trolley disinfecting, number of customers in store, checkout screens etc now seems to work well.It is inevitable that you sometimes get too close to other customers at times but on the whole everyone is good natured and gives you distance. Some wear facemasks,I don't as I cannot find any yet that fit with hearing aids and glasses, currently working out if I can make a silk scarf bandana type that ties behind the head. The high street has been made single lane traffic so the the pavements are wider for pedestrians, all with markers to remind of the 2m distance.
