This morning I had occasion to phone two banks.Ā

NatWest:Ā  I was answered by a recorded message asking whether I'd rather use Welsh or English. I tapped 1 for English and was immediately connected to a polite young lady at my local branch who told me exactly what I needed to know.Ā  Two or three minutes, job done.Ā

HSBC:Ā  I was answered by a recorded message, a lengthy menu, key in your account number, calls are recorded for whatever purpose it is this week, we are experiencing an exceptionally high volume of calls, you are in a queuing system, please wait to be connected to an agent, thank you for your patience, here's some ghastly electronic music which we won't give you the option of turning off, sorry for the delay, your call is important to us, all of the above repeated for about 15 minutes.Ā  I finally got through to another polite young person, who spoke perfect English with an Indian accent, so I suspect he was in an overseas call centre.Ā  Ā He couldn't have been more helpful and told me I could have avoided the wait by doing it online, which I'll try next time.

I just thought I'd mention this in case anyone's thinking of opening a new bank account and deciding who with.

Most of the charity clothes distributers say that if you wouldn’t give it to your best friend, don’t give it to the charity.
The less well off people still have their dignity. Ā I can understand that, I have been on the poor end of things in the past.

  • @AnniD ... I think they vary ... some will accept rags and dome only want wearable items. Why not try phoning your local Salvation Army office and ask 😊

I've just read that gas boilers are to be banned in new built houses from next year - that will put the manufacturers, their staff and people like my NDN out of work then. The people in the new houses will presumably go all electric so god help of us when it's really cold weather and the grid can't cope, it's very nearly touch and go at the moment.Ā

On an entirely different moan, I started emptying out my big front door trough (3ft x 2ft) and found to my horror, vine weevil grubs -I'm suddenly sharing your pain @wild edges !Ā  I've binned the old plants and drenched the compost in vine weevil killer but according to the instructions should have done this back in September so will it still work in late November?Ā  How long should I wait before planting violas?Ā  I've had to plant the muscari and crocus into pots in the interim and plan just to drop these pots in at a later date. Are bugs likely to eat these as well?

I think the plan is to install heat pump heating in new homes. These use heat from the air and/or ground so are renewable energy but do also use a small amount of electricity. We looked into this for our house but decided that it would be too noisy but maybe they'll improve that aspect.

@Lizzie27. You’re alright drenching with liquid now, it’s only the nematodes needing to be done earlier.Ā

Thanks Lynn and Philippa.Ā  Why would I need to remove flowering stems though? I had wanted to plant violas in the trough.Ā  I could empty all the compost out and refill but the trough takes nearly 3 bags compost so wouldn't be cheap and I haven't the energy needed.
