Bird feeder observation

  • Today lots of birds, more than for a couple of very cold days. Robin, 3 black birds, lots of sparrows and dunnocks, great and blue tits, collard doves, wood pigeons, gold finches and unusually two magpies. Jackdaws hanging around their chimney nest too. Its amazing what a bit of sun can do.

First find your peanuts!   Haven't seen any on sale round here for a couple of years.
I'm surprised. Peanuts are readily available in my favourite Super-U supermarket, here in Brittany. Maybe you haven't looked in the appropriate section. I find mine in the Fruits Secs (dry fruit) section, took these pics this morning, there were 4 different brands available, quite cheap too.

Very rarely go to Super U @papi Jo and the only peanuts I've seen in Leclerc rcently were in the fruit and nuts section, roasted and from China.   I just want plain, loose peanuts for the birds and not Chinese.  No peanuts in the birds and critters section and none at France Rurale in Moutiers either.

I have seen them in LeClerc down here @Obelixx along with the dried fruit, mind you they were tucked in with the dates!

Squirrel tore my fat holder off the line and bu**ered off with the contents. I'm not buying any more. A peanut garland might last ten minutes here - if I was lucky😡
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Haven't seen them here @floralies - and I do look for my own cooking - but I've just received a Vivara catalogue and they have loose peanuts, square fat blocks with peanuts and meal worms that I haven't found here since spring and a food mix containing shelled sunflower seeds which I've never seen here.   I shall place an order.  They're based in Lille.

I wire the feeders on to brackets/hooks etc, or attach them with a trigger hook. That way - the feeder can't go walkies, and I can get them off for refilling ;)

I like the sound of a trigger hook. What does it shoot?👺

I just read your post about rigging up a 'jiggler'. At the last house, we tied a small water bottle full of plastic beads to a length of string. That was then draped over the fence near the feeders, through a loop to keep it straight, and back to the window on the conservatory, and inside to a convenient position. When you pulled the string, the bottle rattled very effectively.
We could sit in comfort and wait for the squirrels... ;)

@Obelixx, I have ordered from Vivara quite a few times but finding them quite expensive now. The bird feeders are good value, cheaper than in the shops and better quality. At the moment I am relying on some good friends to bring bulk buys of sunflower hearts when they drive over.
