Did you water before and after???  If not go and give it a good 10 litres now, poured slowly so it soaks in rather than runs off and again tomorrow.  I hope it's in semi-shade and not at the top of a rockery where drainage may be a bit too fierce for it to do well.

The new sticks will be something completely different, especially if they have fern like leaves.   Photo needed either now or when they show new foliage.

Hi @ian.mckay- glad it's ok, but I was just reading back and noticed you're planning a rockery to the front of the acer. Heathers tend not to like the same conditions as acers - they prefer sun and well drained soil, so you may need to be careful with choices.
As long as they have decent drainage, and some sunshine, they should fine.  :)

@Fairygirl is right.  Heathers, whether the calluna or erica tupes need difefrent soil conditions from Japanese maples.   https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=1003

Must admit, I do worry about your car in a rockery where drainage is usually too fierce for their liking.  A pic would help as would an indication of how much sun it's going to get because rockery plants like full sun and Japanese maples don't.

  • An explanation of what I am trying to do

I am not a gardner I have kept racing pigeons all my life I an Old OAP. I have been gifted a daughter in law (She is the driving force) and granddaughter who are Polish and she decided my garden needs attention (not done much with it for 26yrs)  so about two yrs ago we planted 180 box hedge plants 200 bulbs I did most of the digging and at the side of the house we have a farm track type road about 4 ft rising to 6 ft above my garden with a retaining wall. The house is set back 6 ft at one end and 10 ft at the others end, so I have a raised earth bed area starting at 1 ft wide going out to 7 ft wide with a staircase splitting it into two areas The right side is approx 7 x 7 sloping from back to front and with a drop of about 3 ft all new soil sieved to 10mm I have put JM in the corner at the highest point protected from south and west which is where most of the wind comes from, below that I have put large white stones (don't know name of them) and planted small heather plants (4) I intend to take well grown heather from old garden spot where the JM came from and split it to make more plants.
This heather has grown right in front of this JM maple for the last 7yrs so they know each other well

The left hand side to the stairs has been made into a rockery with large Granite stone and the usual rockery plants earlier this year and is coming on fine

I have been in the house 26yrs and only kept a small part tidy we now have Roses ,Gladiola, tulips Box as hedging and box in ball form all sorts of flowers a new greenhouse with tomatoes and chilli grass that looks good with edges cut so all in all the whole garden is looking a lot better
Moving my JM was a long hard decision as it has been a wonderful Tree / Bush and would not like to lose it

Thanks to you all for your help I am most grateful

Ignorance is great I did not know this as I have grown this JM behind the heather for about 7 yrs
The reason I put JM where it is now is it will get protection from full sunlight from the south and West by the wall the heathers will be further down so will get a lot more sun and a lot longer (Oh some sunshine in Aberdeen would be great)

Will need help with pics as that is not my scene but good lady should manage I hope

That's very helpful @ian.mckay. If the plants have been growing near each other for a while, they should be ok  :)
Heathers can take quite a bit of moisture, but I think @Obelixx and myself were a bit concerned that the drainage and soil types could have been problematic for one lot of plants!

It always helps to have as much info as possible for suitable advice. We have a thread for photos - so if you want to post on it, it's always good for a bit of showing off [  ;) ] or for pix of progress etc.  :)

Here's the link to it for future use if you want it. We do a new one each year
