    The leaves going red is a sign it's going into, or has already gone into, dormancy. Basically the leaves are dead, the red pigments are the last to break down.

    I have sent you a PM.

    You can move your maple anytime between now and the ned of Jan/mid Feb as long as the ground is neither frozen nor water-logged.   It would be a shame to do it while there are still colourful leaves hanging on but if you get a good opportunity before they've all fallen, go for it.

    Make sure the new hole is already dug so you just have to tweak the levels so the rootball is exposed to cold and winds as little as possible.  Water the tree roots thoroughly at least an hour before you start digging it up as this will help minimise damage.  Water it well again after re-planting and give it a mulch of good compost or manure which the worms will work in over the winter.

    Thanks I have taken it all in new site is brand new rockery with new top soil. Weather forecast is looking good so will go for it ASAP

    No, it'll be looking normal for a deciduous tree in autumn.

    Just like any other deciduous tree.  It's what they do get thru winter.

  • OK folks bit the bullet today been a nice day no frost overnight and not forecast, so dug out the JM dug new hole in new rockery all sieved earth put a bucket of old compost in mixed it with a little earth set JP in place and re-earthed it heeled it in and it is in a perfect place in a corner protected by a wall on 2 sides lets hope all goes well for 2020 On digging it out I found 2 new sticks about 18 inches along from it and am sure it is new growth
    Question is could this be 2 new trees The leaf that falls off is like a fern leaf
