One of the reasons I like the church doing the Halloween party is that they explain the ancient origins of the festival to the children and they play all the old fashioned party games associated with it (apple bobbing etc). Good fun in a safe environment, keeping alive old traditions.
There is no emphasis on blood, gore and ghouls (the modern debased version of events) - although that doesn't stop the children from dressing up as ghosts and skellingtons.
Setting the party in a dark churchyard and maybe telling a few spooky stories allows the children to feel they are participating in a modern interpretation of events as well as keeping alive the traditions. The setting of pumpkin lanterns on gravestones is done quite ceremoniously and reflects the tradition of lighting a candle to remember the departed.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
Lovely pumpkins MU and LB looking creative. I had a message from the neighbours asking the people taking part in Halloween to confirm and then they will just take the local children to those houses which is much more sensible. Ive had a few shivvery days and a bad head and acheingveyes so I can't wait to say goodbye to it. Hope others are feeling better. It's cool but bright. I've been referred to endocrinology as levels abnormally very high. Topbird hope the bulk cooking goes well it will make life easier for you and I'm sure it will be delicious. My duvet has been kneeded into submission. It's just something they need to do before settling down to sleep. Pansy i hope the furries are calming down and everyone's having a good night's sleep. Hope the blood test results are good.
We didn’t wander the streets with swede lantern MU . Where I lived any date between October the 31st and the 5th of November, you were likely to find that you were a victim of some mischief. But we did go raiding other people’s chumps .
Afties all. Have been doing Lily's TV stuff and further work on the wreath I'm making. Cutting out the cardboard hoops that form the innards of the wreath was really hard so I'm glad I've got that task out of the way.
Interesting hearing about the history of Halloween Rezzers. Also interesting to hear about the neeps. Friend from Crewe carves a turnip for Halloween because she loves the smell it gives off when she puts a t-light inside it. I've never smelt a roasting turnip.
Joyce were you nice and snuggly under your winter duvet last night - I meant to ask earlier.
Ruby that was a terrible story about poor Barry. I'll bet he was very embarrassed. Rebecca I'm sorry to hear that you have been feeling a bit under the weather lately. Take care of yourself.
T'Bird - I hope that you have managed to finish your hedge cutting. As you implied, that will be it for this year.
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
I was never allowed to do Halloween growing up, and then by the time the children's home offered me the opportunity I was 15 and not really that fussed!
We don't get trick or treaters here - our front door looks like a business so maybe that's why?
Good evening to all. Two busy days are after me. Yesterday was the last indian summer day this year. Today is grey, rainy and much colder. Hazel saplings came today and food for my dog, cats, parrot an wild birds. We don't have Halloween here but November 1st is catholic holy day and it's no working day. I'll work with my hazel saplings. I'm going to have dinner now.
Beautiful pumpkins LB, like always. For tomorrow's lunch I'll make pumpkin soup along chicken curry.
Chey, thats quite good. I have to wait a week to 10 days for my results.
Hello Ante, well the Indian Summer couldn't last for much longer. We have had frosty nights here but I was surprised to find a rather tatty peacock butterfly in my garage yesterday. It was flying quite strongly and then escaped out into the garden.

Off out to cut 2 small hedges. Hopefully, a quick job and they'll be neat and tidy for the winter.
