@Lesleya-z ...yes you can.. ignore that it's listed as a climber... it has multiple uses.. it's natural habit is to develop into a bushy 6 x 6 foot shrub... from there it can be trained in other ways if needed... ...this rose may not be to your taste... it's best to pick out some that you like and ask members here if they know about them, to advise you further... it's such a personal choice... what I like, others may not... ...I don't truly recommend The Ancient Mariner for too much shade... it will flop it's long lanky canes and may not be to your liking... it really needs as much sun as possible...
@Lesleya-z I've grown all those... Scepter'd Isle is my favourite, it's about 5.5 feet... it may not be large enough for your purposes but it does grow in semi shade very well... highly scented, easy and floriferous...
Mortimer Sackler will grow upright and freestanding if required... quite tall growing.. expect 8 foot or so.. low thorn and very healthy,... it may suit your purposes better.... if you don't mind the name then do consider this rose..
Hyde Hall... is a thorny, coarse, straggly and very large growing shrub.. the blooms are gorgeous but the plant is not...I had to give it support and it got too much for me...
Thank you, Marlorena! It’s wonderful to be given exactly the advice I need on roses! This is the area. Opposite The left of the window is where it will be. As you can see the fence is not high, nor are the existing shrubs. So I think that SI will be perfect. 5ft plus would work well so that I still see next door’s garden
@Lesleya-z … oh that's a nice view.. no you wouldn't want to block that out... I would say Mortimer Sackler would be too tall … I would also advise to cut back that Cotoneaster to the right... roses don't like to be under overhanging shrub branches... it may not belong to you, but I'd have to just snip off a few overhangs there..
...here's a pic of 'Scepter'd Isle' in my garden during the summer... it's still in bloom today, lots of blooms, and the scent is very strong and consistent on this rose... please allow at least 2 years to develop with minimal pruning...
Thank you so much. Your rose is stunning. That’s the one! The cotoneaster will be going when the berries have gone! I hate it!. I moved here about 5 months ago. Tiny garden which suits me these days. Someone had lifted out every plant apart from a hydrangea and some camellias. So I now want to fill every space with roses.
