When do you give up and bring them into the house? Mine are still ripening at the moment.

They should be fine outside for a while. I bring in the unripe fruits once I don't want to be outside without a coat. I figure the tomatoes probably feel the same.

When the night temperature consistently drop under 10°C and the day temperature under 14 or 15. The best temperature for tomatoes ripening is 20-25 (we rarely get this here) but they still ripen quite well when it is between 15 and 20. Under 15, it slows quite a lot and under 10 it stops completely.

I've got a lot of mine nestling between bananas on the window sill. Just goes to show how hot last year was.

Aren’t you supposed to make green tomato chutney out of them? Usually jars and jars of the stuff even though your consumption is about half a jar a year. The rest are given away with the custom being to feign gratitude on their receipt.

I don’t like green tomatoes can’t be bothered with chutney, I sow early and rarely get any green ones.

One of my favourite films is Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café but I have yet to find a good recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes despite much searching.

I'll have to bring some inside too I think. Mine are in a greenhouse, but it's not going to be warm enough. We've already had about ten nights in single figs, which is less than usual, but they didn't get going as early anyway this year, so they're a wee bit slower. They've been nice though, especially Sungold.  :)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • The Roma if they are just turning will ripen nicely on the window ledge, but not if they are green. The black cherry come in on the truss and ripen from green ( had to take down a couple of plants last week) Not sure how many more good days we will get after nearly a week of rain.
