Grass too long to mow!

  • Hi all, I finally got the grass cut, and it actually looked like I succeeded in killing it but it's coming back!  Anyway, my box of bulbs arrived from Holland and sat in the shed until the weather cleared.  I set to work, and planted about 180 bulbs over three days!  It was bloody hard work, and expensive, so the buggers better grow!

Our garden is very shallow, and what soil there is is clay and stones...glad I bought one of those auger drill bits, no way I could have dug it by hand.  I buried the drill in the ground twice and had to dig it out with a spade, my husband was not impressed...

Thank you all for your input, fingers crossed I will have good news to report in spring.

  • Hi Dove, the tension!  Have done my best, don't know how I will survive the long months until the first signs of growth.  Need another project.

    Knitting? 🧶

Keeps me out of too much mischief 😉

  • Back in the day, I did knit.  I have neither the patience or eyesight now!  Prefer pottering outside, weather permitting.

It’s that flippin weather ... it’s so often ‘the wrong sort’ for what we want to do 😉 🌈

If its not a massive field, can you not use a sythe, or shears, I have tried yellow rattle (again this year) never had a single one germinate.  I dont think any mower even on the highest setting is going to cope with grass a foot high
  • It can be done, I do my meadow area every year. I wait till the grass starts to die back and is less lush and if possible, is also dry.
I have an electric mower: I set it on the highest setting and remove the box, then rear it up on its back wheels and approach slowly from the edges inwards, a little at a time.
DO NOT try this with a Flymo though, if you value your feet!
It takes a number of passes to work your way in and it all has to be raked afterwards and then mowed again on a lower setting, preferably after a few days of regrowth, in order to look decent.

We also do very long grass with a mower, we've done knee high. Take off the collector and go slowly, if needed do as buttercup described leaning the mower back and putting it down on top of the grass, also works for clumps of rushes! And you must pick up the trimmings or they turn into a thick impenetrable mulch that the mower simply can't handle next time.
  • And use a bungee to hold the flap open... WEAR HEAVY TROUSERS!
