But...But... what about the gardeners world MUST have list... wild flowers, edibles, lawn weeds and a "no-chemical" religion??? And to hell with anyone who just wants lawn

I agree @glasgowdan. I like a lawn, and I do a bit of weed and feed in spring and cut regularly, but I'm too lazy to do the whole scarifying, spiking malarkey. It gets on with it itself.
Having said that - I've been doing a bit of that today. The grass has had virtually nothing done to it since the builders were all over it three years ago, and then  the roughcasters in January. It's not exactly a bowling green   :D

I'm quite jealous of @andy.hansen88's green sward. It's lovely  :)

  • Fairygirl, he might not want borders but it will look very bland without them. Keeping the edges of the lawn against the fence and wall neat will be time consuming if he leaves it as it is. Borders are good for encouraging bees and butterflies into your garden.

It's not time consuming at all. A few seconds with a strimmer. It's so easy to trim lawn against vertical structures! Beds are a slower process, but once you're on top of it they still only take seconds

    You're preaching to the converted @chirpy999. :)
I have all of those things in my garden, but @andy.hansen88hasn't asked for advice about what to have or not have in his garden. He's asked about his grass, and how to care for it.   :)
