Morning Chive - you snuckered in there. Yes, I'm just finishing my breakfast and then I am off to tackle the hedge. Fingers crossed I get it finished. You have a good day.

Excuse me while I have a little rant. The Children's Commisioner for England is suggesting that schools stay open early evenings and weekends to occupy young children and keep them from getting in trouble. Who the heck is she thinking will staff all these after school activities; where will the money come from and 'Hello' but why aren't the parents occupying their youngsters at these times?
    Sorry, rant over.

LB it’s ridiculous there are already after school clubs and children today do so many activities already I honestly think kids need to be a bit bored sometimes it’s unhealthy to be busy busy all the time and it’s a great life lesson to learn to entertain yourself quietly. Schools are for education and social interaction not baby sitting!

    Morning all.
A beautiful, sunny Autumn morning with a chill in the air earlier.

Ante, hope you find some mushrooms to accompany your vegetables.

Extra cleaning and janitorial staff plus heating costs will add to the bill of having schools open at weekends. I think that some children's lives are too full of planned activities.

I remember the fun my brothers and sister (this was before before the youngest ones came along and we were just 4 in number!) and I had with our friends. The magical imaginary games we invented; the exploring that we did and we never got into any trouble. We respected the countryside and looked out for the critters. We waded in streams built a swing over one of said streams and would be out until it was dusk. During the holidays, Mum would pack butties (sandwiches Ante) and mix us some squash and we could be out all day. We were never bored. We did come home filthy though.

I echo Runners M-U - great story about the egg and the caring aspect that went out of the window when other things proved too tempting.

My childhood hols were much the same, packed lunch and squash . Me and my cousin would wander the fields, picnic by streams ,build shelters and come home filthy. One day we took our picnic into a very overgrown field , spread our picnic out on a large flat stone .Halfway through our lunch my cousin said to me ,’ is that writing on the stone ? ‘We rubbed off some of the moss and lichen ,and there very worn away but just about readable  was someone’s name, we  had been having our picnic on one of those table like gravestones . My cousin screamed ,and we ran all the way home ,leaving the remains of the picnic on the grave stone . We were only nine .
