It was a bad year in spring for the blossom to set in some areas ( weather related) and then in summer there was alot of black fly, that causes curled leaves at the ends on new growth. For those of us without tip bearer trees that is not such a problem , but might affect the ability to set flower on tip bearing trees. As your trees are young yet and the weather the last two years has been unusual it is just a matter of give them time.😁

I'm fairly sure I remember Constant Bramley Failure playing a session on the John Peel show back in the day. Triploid Pollination was their biggest hit.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you all!
  • Thanks Joy. Yes I planted it 3 years ago but have other pollinators in the garden. When’s the best time to prune an apple tree? Or not at all?

I would prune when dormant but it's difficult to advise when you can't see the tree! I take it that all your trees flower at the same time.

They do say prune in summer to restrict growth and winter for fruit, but winter, that will also promote growth.

I see lots of trees at the side of the road, presumably grown from apple cores thrown out of car windows. They never get pruned and are dripping with fruit. My advice is leave it alone for a bit.
  • Joy yes, they seem to. Purplerallim, yes, I’ll give it a go in the winter. Fidgetbones - dead right!

But what are you going to prune? As it’s a tip bearer shortening the branches will remove the fruit in wood.

  • What does tip bearing mean? The apples are on the ends of the branches, not along them, would that be it? Should I leave well alone then?
