Dahlia Triffids

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
I've only been away a week and my dahlias have gone berserk!
Ive deadheaded, but on the stem, beneath the dead flowers there are shoots . Will these flower or should I cut them off?

    I'd reckon you'll get more flowers @B3  :)

My Arabian Night has suddenly gone berserk too, must be the cooler weather - currently a lovely 28ºC. For the ones that haven’t flowered yet, I have snipped off the side buds (meant to give you a bigger main one) as there are so many there is not enough room for them all.

Hope you had a nice break B3.

Yes thanks. @Nollie. I can't believe how much everything has grown. There must've been plenty of rain. There certainly was in Ireland☔

I have to admit I've just cut my Arabian Night right down. It had got too massive for the container (and leaning out in all directions). Shame because the flowers were lovely.

I've just googled arabian night and found that it's one of my triffids! Still manageable at the moment, but it's only year two so perhaps next year I'll need to put manners on it.

If you keep deadheading , they will flower until the frosts. New buds are at  the axils of the first pair of leaves behind the existing flower. If you want larger flowers, carefully remove one of the pair.

Thanks @fidgetbones. I prefer the smaller flowers so I'll leave them be. 😊

    That's a great expression  :D
Perhaps you could try putting it at a school desk and making it do lines?
