    Quince do tend to be hard ... but I’ve never ever seen a purple one or one that is ‘ribbed’ like that

    Yeh I've never seen a purple one. I've even tried go ogling purple quince with nothing that resembles

    I’ve done that too 😂 and I’ve gone through all my books including the big RHS one .... we will find out ... we will not be beaten 😖

    What about a pomegranate

    Can't see the "flower end" of the fruit very well... if it's pomegranate it should have a very prominent "ex-flower" visible...

    Tried several and they didn't recognise it!

    No there isn't a flower bit on the end like a pomegranate has

    emma, I can't promise anything but I'm at the RHS Tatton Flower Show tomorrow so I'll take the picture of your plant and ask around whilst I'm there.
    p.s. can you just confirm it is a shrub and not a climber.
