Verbascum leaves are a bit greyer I think - or at least mine are. I think it looks like a humungous fox glove!

Looks more like a verbascum from the back! Mine can reach 5+ feet in my garden.

That’s my thought too ... looks more like foxglove at the front, verbascum from the back ... amazing the difference light can make ...

Verbascums are often transformed into unsightly specimens by the caterpillars of the Mullein Moth (Cucullia verbasci) .
For this reason I stopped growing them .

Does the mullien moth decimate other plants - or just stay on the Verbascum?

They are also partial to buddleia. Luckily mine are separated by my house, so should be safe

It looks like a mullein to me, even though it seems to be on steroids.  It should have yellow flowers in a spike if it is.

Yes , they're partial to the Figworts as well (Scophularia sp..) ; although these are commonly encountered around lake and pond margins .Popular with wasps and not often grown in gardens . Maybe a plant for an aquatic or wildlife garden .

There are loads of verbascums, small ones, tall ones, pink ones, yellow ones..and they are in same family as foxgloves so quite a bit of similarity.  But your triffid is a verbascum to me...
