Lupins are dying

  • My Lupins don't have any sign of aphids, mould, fungi or in fact anything.  The only sign they are not well is the flopping of one or more of the leaf stems.  Wouldn't there by something visible if it was damping off disease?  Your Lupins look wonderful Nulty. I do have Lupin envy and it hurts!

@Guernsey Donkey2 do they look like these, as you know I grow everything from seeds and these will be my Lupins for next year, very bedraggled but I’m not bothered about them, they will be fine when the weather warms up and I pot them on.

  • I would say yes Lyn, some of them do look the same as yours.  Rather than faffing around anymore with descriptions I took these pictures late this afternoon. You will see there are a variety of problems with my Lupins.  The first has some leaves/petals that are curling back on themselves. Why? What can I do to keep it alive. The Lupin below has one stem that has dropped lower than the rest although there is still a hopeful green centre shoot just showing up.The next Lupin has a patch of brown on this stem. The last lupin has just keeled over, even the new central shoot has gone over too, can I make this plant good again?
  • @Lyn and @Guernsey Donkey2,..neither of your plants look to be in trouble,..Lupins do give a start and stop before finally deciding to take off,..one thing i do with the weak leaves is cut some off but not all,..that helps,..though try not cut the one that comes from right in the middle of the plant as its usually the stem that produces the first bloom,..they will pick up when we get more sun.

Could it be from just being in the pot? I plant them out even when small from cuttings and they seem to grow on quite well. I have no problems with pests on lupins. Hostas on the other hand the slugs love  :(
  • @jaffacakes,..how far are your Lupins advanced?,..i can never compare mine even with neighbours as i am fairly walled in and tend to be a few degrees warmer.

My Hostas got a thrashing from the Hailstones,..ripped right through them but they recovered once i cut off most of the damage foliage,..you can still see the odd rip in the foliage though Slugs and Snails don't touch mine.

  • Thanks for the re-assurance Nulty, I feel like a mother hen, fretting over her chicks - it's only a few plants for goodness sake has been uttered here - yes true, but that's not the point.  I grew some of these Lupins from seed and others arrived as plug plants so of course I CARE! I'll let you know how and if they develop although I realize that most won't flower until next year now.

They seem to be ok, although I think they could be a bit too wet for babies. Have you got somewhere undercover for them. Cut any grotty bits off.

  • @Guernsey Donkey2,..''Like a Mother Hen Fretting Over Chicks'',..sounds like a good gardener,..caring for plants was drummed into me as a child.

@Lyn has a point about they being a bit too wet,..if soil is too wet,..or heavy,..changes happen in the soil which are not suited to Lupins,..they thrive on moist but well drained soil,..something my Dad used to say was Lupins like Iron in the soil and so he would add Iron in a granulated form around the Lupins,..i really can not remember much more on this,..my way out of Damp Off and watching seedlings was and still is dividing my mature Lupins,..i divided early in Spring and all of they are healthy despite the belief that Lupins don't divide well,..you may well laugh but Epsom Salts adds to the PH of the soil and also adds Magnesium,..it works for Roses in particular if they appear tired looking.

If I could "like" that video I would Philip, but I know you wouldn't "like" that 🙂. I have never seen such beautiful lupins growing wild.
