Rash decision on brambles

Spent this morning clearing and shredding brambles and came out in nasty rash as per pic. Is this usual, as had same reaction, though not quite as extreme when trimming back the flax. Both covered in spiders. Any ideas?

Probably exacerbated by heat/sunshine and perspiration. I’d put some calamine lotion on that and maybe take some antihistamine ... if you feel ill ring NHS on 111

I’m not a medic but that’s what I’d have said to family members if that had happened.

Not sure if this is normal but would phone NHS direct for some advice. Tell them what you had been doing and see what they say. Had you spread it with anything which might have coursed it?
  • Thanks @NannaBoo and @Dovefromabove have just antihistamine and applied Eurax cream. Swelling has eased a bit, just wondered if anyone had experienced such a strong reaction? Torso covered in spots too. Great!

Keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or doesn't improve phone the NHS. It has been very hot today so as Dovefromabove said it could be the heat and perspiration. Hope it clears up soon.

I get something similar from dealing with sticky bud/goose grass and most conifers.   Now I get OH to deal with them as he's thick-skinned.

I hope the anti-histamines and lotion work for you.

Watch out for other symptoms like swelling. I got badly scratched while tackling a big bramble patch a few years ago and picked up a nasty bacterial blood infection. It took 3 different GPs and 3 different antibiotics over 9 weeks to sort it out.

Take an antihistamine (Loratidine is non drowsy)  and apply hydrocortisone 1% cream or Eurax HC cream.

@fidgetbones ... my suggestion of calamine lotion probably dates me eh?

You couldn't buy it over the counter then, but a mild steroid cream applied sparingly works wonders on allergic rashes. It works well on plankton rashes as well as nettle.
  • Thanks @fidgetbones @steephill @NannaBoo @Obelixx slowly getting there! Nurse I saw advised allergy check, which I think is a must. Last two attempts to do some gardening has ruined my weekends! 😏
