Recommendations for what to plant

So I've got a decent sized pot that's about to become available and would prefer to put some kind of fruit or veg in there.

Any recommendations on what to plant?

The pot is 13 inch diameter and 10 inches deep. Bought originally to have a go at growing potatoes in.

Any ideas (not potatoes)?

I grow aubergine in pots. They do pretty well. Chillis or sweet peppers also. Or tumbling tomatoes.

Sounds like a decent sized pot, so you could grow basil or other herbs around the base of whatever you plant in there.

Thanks for the ideas 😊 don't know why but I thought you needed heat to grow aubergine?

If you can get hold of this month’s edition of the RHS magazine The Garden, there’s a very interesting feature on growing fruit in pots.

Ah thanks! Is that something I can get in the shops or is it post only?

Think I’ve seen it in the shops £4.95 ... hope you can find it 😊

a blueberry plant would do well in a pot but eventually it would outgrow that size.

It's just slighty too big for a strawberry plant but too big is fine, it would eventually thrive in it.

No blackcurrant would do well except maybe a ben sarek, the smallest variety I know of - I am trying this at the moment, I've got a handful of fruit in my first year.

I have grown raspberries in that size quite well before, go for a small variety like autumn bliss or fallgold

Otherwise the best fruit for that size would probably be a gooseberry - I would recommend the hinnomaki red.

depends on your preference of course but I personally rate the blueberry best. If you go for a blueberry you will need to use ericaceous soil which has a lower acidity, otherwise it won't do well.
I would recommend the variety sunshine blue. The yield and taste are great and it does not require as big a pot as other varieties.

I'd grow summer berries also if outside and unheated , or if it is a greenhouse , beans or tomatoes . I try to grow stuff that is either expensive or tastes bland at supermarkets :P

What is the lighting like in the area you want to put the plants? Does it get any direct sunlight from windows throughout the day or is it all indirect sunlight + indoor lighting?

What is the temperature and humidity like where you want to put the plants? Is there a draft from the heating and/or cooling systems?

Different plants need different conditions and if you put the wrong plant in the space, it will either die off or just struggle to survive. And some spaces are ill-suited for any natural plant and it would just be better to get a high-quality silk artificial plant instead.
