    Not astilbe ... not in a million years. 
    Whoever told you that shouldn’t be working in
    a garden centre 😢 

    Looking forward to seeing the flowers ...

    Several months on, and I'm no nearer an ID. This is what they look like now, about to flower. Any suggestions?

    It reminds me of Eupatorium (Joe Pye weed) but I don't think the leaves are quite right.
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    I agree. We've got Hemp Agrimony all over the place, so I'll have a better look tomorrow. Thanks for the idea. I suppose it could be a Eupatorium cultivar?

    I'll 2nd JennyJ's ID ; looks to me like Eupatorium maculatum 'Purpureum' .

    That's good. I'm convinced. I've never bothered with Eupatorium because I tend to spend time pulling up E. cannabinum, which loves the conditions round here.

    I am extremely confused.
    The plant in first pic is not the same plant as 2nd pic.
    1st plant has leaves opposite .
    2nd plant the leaves are not opposite.
    That nursery is hopeless..neither plant is  Astilbe or Tiarella.
    Demand a full refund and then never go back to them.

    It's slightly worrying that someone running a nursery can't see that plant isn't an Astilbe, and presumably couldn't see it isn't a Tiarella either. They're both common plants   :/

    Or maybe he's simply a chancer, like those seed sellers on eBay.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
