Hi Everyone Happy New Year. Thank you for your condolences, everything went really well yesterday and it was a happy not sad ceremony., With bestest friends invited only so lots of support. The nurses gave me some lovely cyclamen that I shall pop into the garden in a special place, when the weather gets better, although the sun did shine yesterday and there was a🌈 rainbow after early showers.
So...what did you think about the Lunar Weather Calender last year? Was it accurate for you? Fairly accurate, or totally wrong?? I kept notes throughout the year, and I felt it was fairly accurate,,even surprisingly so sometimes.
I have now received the 2023 Diary and I am delighted to see no major snow predicted for January although globally the weather will be very variable. OK I said no major snow but it may possibly pay us a fleeting visit towards the 7th and on or around the 22nd apart from that, the wretched wind is going to persist and fog is fairly dominant. Between 9-14th A cold snap hits, do beware sowing too soon even if the Lunar Calendar recommends it. 15-27th Cooler fresher period with plenty of fog and rain
28-31st January Slightly warmer but wet. Looks as though the Garlic will have to be started off in Polytunnel..that is if I can get a new cover at this time of year. There are more holes than cover in the present one!
Will give you new biodynamic Calender details for the next few days tomorrow. In the meantime stay dry and warm.
Thanks @biofreak. I'm pleased it went well for you and hope you and all the critters are OK.
We've had unusually warm but very wet weather here and everything is very soggy, even the dunes above the beach when we took the doggies for walkies yesterday. Never seen the sand at the edges of the dunes looking so dark or so much of them eroded by storms.
Anyway, I'm back on physio again after the Xmas break and my stupid slipped disk is easing so I shall see if I can get the garlic in tomorrow pm after the morning session. If not it'll have to be modules.
Not planning to sow any seeds before Candlemas/Feb 2nd. It's an old Celtic festival of lights to mark the midway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox and seen as the start of the farming year. I have some new heat mats to help get toms and chillies going indoors and the PT will be fine for sowing brassicas and pink onions and some ornamentals for pollinators.
In the meantime, we'll be clearing beds, piling on compost and, I hope, planting black mulberries along the paddock fence to make a screen between us and it.

Where have you got black mulberries from in France.?.can only find white ones!! I've always wanted a mulberry and it would be a lovely tree to plant in memory of O/H. Will do Calender tomorrow as caught up with Admin today. Everything has to be done so fast here. House feels empty..Cats sick of being cuddled and weather foul!!!
@biofreak I got the seed from the RHS membership seed distribution scheme before Brexit stopped such things. If you PM me your address I can try posting you one as I have several.
I'm just about to order a crab apple - malus halliana Adirondack so could see how they pack the roots.

Hello , good hear lots of support from fiends & cats 🐈
Ground at home still very wet , however , keep doing a few little jobs in garden when it’s not raining Allotment drains really well , still lots to do but getting sorted out , lots of fruit pruning needed Finally bought some garlic from local garden centre , have had problems the last couple of years getting any This is the first year for a long time that onions 🧅, shallots, garlic 🧄 & broad beans not planted before Christmas , such terrible weather
Glad I'm not the only one holding back, but then my Diary shows that I did nothing except in polytunnel on 28th February last year as we had Storm Eunice. Broad Beans are nice and sturdy under cover despite missing a roof at least five times.!None yet in Leclerc or Garden Centre. So...if you have a mind to do something this week 5/6/7th January are Flower Days and you could pop in some bare root flowering shrubs and prepare a space for new Artichokes. You can also take cuttings from Roses and Forsythia plus other Spring flowering shrubs. Cut into 20cm lengths and pop in groups of three in a Nursery Bed. 8th January Leaf Days no gardening recommended as Moon apogee. In the Morning of the 9th you could prepare your Asparagus Bed if you have not already done so. This should be done before March when you will be putting new plants in. If you have a heated greenhouse sow some lettuce. 10/11th January are Fruit Days Put wires up for Raspberries, and plant out bare root Bush Fruit. Well that gets us into next week. Happy Gardening...will message you Obelixx.
Hi everyone Found Messenger, hope you got mine Obelixx. This weather is diabolical!! Just can't do anything in garden or Polytunnel. The week ahead is fairly quiet regarding things to do, so perhaps we should just concentrate on planning new plantings/rotation and ordering Seeds. Potatoes are now available, so if you want a particular variety get your Order in now. 16th/17th Jan ..No gardening recommended before 10.40amvon 16th as Noeud descending. Work on areas around Globe Artichokes, turn soil over, take and add compost.writing this, just realized that I have not lifted any Jerusalem Artichokes... Don't fancy cleaning all the mud off..usually pop in a colander and hose clean outside...but I'm not going to do that in this weather! 18th January..Leaf Day .Cut Hazel for Bean Sticks. Prune old trees, cutting out crossing branches and dead wood. I'm still gathering Silver Birch twigs blown down by these gales. Make wonderful Pea Sticks and cover for nursery beds to protect seeds and new plants from birds and cats. 19/20/21st January..Moon in front of Sagittarius ♐ so Fruit Days. In mild areas sow Round as opposed to Wrinkled Peas. Space the rows 30cms apart for Dwarf varieties and 40cms for Climbing varieties. No gardening recommended after 2.50pm on 21st as Moon Périgée. Happy Gardening from a very soggy garden in Normandy!
Got your PM @biofreak and hop to post your mourus nigra on Tuesday pm as I'm out all day tomorrow and have physio on Tues am. My malus Adirondack and roses arrived just bare roots and stems in a plastic bin bag in a carton so very basic but all OK so far.
It's been far too wet here to garden apart from a bried spell when we planted the malus and it's set to continue wet and very windy here for the foreseeable. I shall end up having to pot on my potted on brassica plugs at this rate.
Resisting the urge to sow seeds.
Hope you're OK and the critters too.
